Northeast Regional Art Show
A reception for the K-8 Northeast Regional Art Show was held at Case Western Reserve on March 10. Lindsey Elementary first-grader David Zagorski placed third overall in the grades K-2 level and fifth-grader Bonnie Hartman placed third overall in the grades 3-5 level.
Senior Citizens Recognition
Senior citizens living in the West Geauga community are invited to the annual West Geauga Senior Citizens Recognition Dinner May 8 at 4:30 p.m. in the West Geauga High School cafeteria, 13401 Chillicothe Road in Chester Township. Sponsored by West Geauga Local Schools and the Rotary Club of Chesterland, the evening promises to be fun and entertaining.
Payment of $5 per person will be collected at the door. For reservations, call Sandy at the West Geauga Board of Education Office at 440-729-6803 by May 1.

Raising Awareness
Lindsey Elementary fifth-grader Lindsey Askew and her family are helping to raise awareness for finding cures for childhood cancer. Lindsey participated in the St. Baldrick’s fundraiser at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital on March 14.
Doctors, nurses and volunteers got their hair clipped and shaved to raise money for cancer research. Appreciation goes out to Lindsey Askew and all of the participants in this life-changing event.
WG Band Rates Superior
The West Geauga Symphonic Band competed at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District 7 Large Group contest on March 8 and received the highest rating of “I” – Superior.
The group performed three pieces of music in the Mentor High School Auditorium for a panel of three judges and then sight read a piece of music for a fourth judge. The band plays a piece of music that it has never performed or seen before, with four minutes of time to study the piece before performing.
The rating system for the event is I – II – III – IV V, with “I” being superior and “V” being very poor. The West Geauga Symphonic Band received a rating of “I” from each judge, for an overall rating of “I” – Superior.
To help support the West Geauga bands, there will be a fundraiser in May. Danny Boys of Chesterland has partnered with West Geauga Band Boosters to host a fundraiser May 5 from 3-7 p.m.
The fundraiser will include an all-you-can-eat buffet, including soft drinks and desserts. All proceeds will be used to help fund the instrumental music programs in the West Geauga School District.
Kiwanis Middle School Students Of The Month
West Geauga Kiwanis Club’s middle school Students of the Month are eighth-graders Christina Praprost for December, Kevin Wright for January and Camryn Heatwole for February.
Christina has been a member of the basketball and track teams. She has also played on the travel and Cleveland select soccer teams. She is a member of the honor roll, 4.0 Club and is enrolled in all enrichment classes. In her spare time, Christina has volunteered at the Rosemary Center for Children with Disabilities.
Kevin has been a member of the basketball and recreation council baseball teams. He has achieved honor roll and 4.0 grade point average. In his free time, he has volunteered as a scorekeeper for the girls basketball teams.
Camryn is a member of the eighth-grade football cheerleaders. She has achieved honor roll and a 4.0 grade point average. In her spare time, she has volunteered as an assistant coach for cheerleaders with special needs.
Kiwanis High School Students Of The Month
West Geauga Kiwanis Club’s high school Students of the Month are Abe Akucewich for December, Kayli Doll for January and Katherine Cavasinni for February.
Abe’s school activities include soccer (captain in senior year), lacrosse and school science fair. He made 1st team CVC, and 1st team all greater Cleveland in soccer in his senior year. He is on the honor roll at West Geauga High School and on the dean’s list at Lakeland Community College. He is applying to Ohio University, Cleveland State University and the University of Cincinnati. He is considering a major in accounting.
Kayli plays soccer and softball, is a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club and participates in freshman mentoring. She has won a Yale Book Award and three academic letters. She also has participated in the Picnic in the Park, Family Fun Night for Lindsey, Cleveland Food Bank, Kiwanis pancake breakfasts, Habitat for Humanity and Lake Metroparks Farmpark. She is applying to The Ohio State University, Miami University and Ohio University. She is considering majoring in computer science or engineering.
Katherine is a freshman mentor, on the student council, senior class secretary and co-editor of the Whirlwind student newspaper. She also has played soccer for three years. She is on the honor roll and was awarded the Book Award in the category of science her junior year. She was selected to be on the Homecoming Court. She has volunteered for the libraries “Book Buddy” program and coached younger players during a soccer camp. She is applying to John Carroll, Miami of Ohio and Dayton universities. She hopes to major in education or journalism.
