Chardon Safety Village
Chardon Schools is proud to sponsor the Chardon Safety Village program geared for children entering kindergarten in the fall of 2013. The two-week program will be held July 29 through Aug. 9 and will run for two hours in the morning or afternoon.
A qualified teacher will instruct children on a variety of safety subjects including: traffic signals, police and fire safety, playground safety, street signs, school bus safety, stranger awareness, bicycle safety, poison prevention and home safety.
The program will accommodate up to 30 students in each class. Parent volunteer participation is appreciated. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
The class fills up quickly, so register soon. Morning classes run from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and the afternoon classes run 12:30-2:30 p.m. Download the registration form from the district’s homepage at www.chardonschools.org.
Honor Society Hosts Quiz Bowl
Quiz Bowl is an annual trivia tournament sponsored by the Chardon High School National Honor Society. The event is a fundraiser to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital. This year there were 24 student teams competing, with the semifinals and championship match televised and broadcast throughout the school.
The teams competed for the bragging rights of being the last team standing. The top three donor classrooms were invited to be part of the live audience at the event and were given a pizza party. The event raised over $868, with all proceeds going to St. Jude’s.
Chardon Testing Dates
As families set up doctor, dentist or other appointments that would necessitate a child missing school, it is important to avoid the dates of the state-mandated tests, including the Iowa/CogAT Tests and Achievement Tests.
To help in planning, the following 2013 test dates are listed:
Grade 3: Ohio Achievement Testing April 23-24
Grade 4: Ohio Achievement Testing April 30 and May 2
Grade 5: Ohio Achievement Testing April 30 and May 1, 3
Hilltopper Wrestling Camp
The Chardon Hilltopper Wrestling Camp will be held June 17-19 from 8-10 a.m. This camp is open to kids age 5 through those entering the sixth grade.
The camp will focus on Hilltopper wrestling fundamentals as well as serve as an introduction to the sport for those who have not wrestled before. Look for registration information and flyers in the next few weeks.
State Immunization Requirements for 7th-Graders
Attention sixth-grade parents: By the start of next school year, children are required to have a booster shot in the diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis series. Parents must provide the school with written verification of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, acelluar pertussis, adult and adolescent formulation) vaccination from a healthcare provider. Failure to do so will result in exclusion from school until the requirement is met.
This requirement is a state law. Please contact the child’s physician now to see if he or she has already had this shot or to make arrangements to receive it.
The school district has already begun accepting written verification of this vaccination for next year. This vaccination can be obtained through the Geauga County General Health District. Contact them at 440-279-1950 or see Lori Strickland, Chardon Middle School nurse, for a clinic schedule.
4th-Grade Invention Convention
Mrs. Joanne DeShetler’s fourth-grade gifted students had a busy month of March as they competed in their classroom Invention Convention. Special thanks go to local judges who interviewed the students and ranked the inventions, including Mr. Tom Curtin of Geauga Park District; Mrs. Debbie Hofstetter of Chardon Schools Foundation and a retired Chardon teacher; Mrs. Deann Mooney, a retired Chardon teacher; Mrs. Debbie Morgan, Geauga County gifted coordinator; and Mr. Paul Pira of Geauga Park District.
The top scorers will go on to compete in the Cleveland Invention Convention at Strongsville High School on May 11. Best of luck to our Chardon competitors.
