For more information on these programs, contact the park district at 440-286-9516 or visit them online at www.geaugaparkdistrict.org.

Animal Friends Picnic

July 24, 1-3 p.m.

With the magic of life-like costumes, come shake hands (or paws) with a skunk and other animal friends, and learn cool facts about them as part of the fun at The West Woods Nature Center, Turkey Ridge Shelter, 9465 Kinsman Road in Russell Township.

The park district will provide hot dogs and drinks; please bring a side dish or dessert to share.

Registration is required.

Books Alive Series: “Pax”

July 29, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Kids ages 10 to 14 will explore the world of “Pax” by Sara Pennypacker in a summer reading program at The West Woods Nature Center, 9465 Kinsman Road, Russell Township.

To celebrate the book about the powerful relationship between a boy and his fox, participants will try all the tricks of sight, sound and smell a fox like Pax would use to find his way home.

The group will also hike to the site of a fox den at The West Woods. Though it’s unlikely any live foxes will be encountered during the middle of the day, the group will view photos taken by cameras in Geauga Park District, find out how to recognize the smell of a fox and practice tracking their footprints and scat.

Since the book also features some peacefully breathtaking illustrations by Jon Klassen, participants will also practice drawing foxes in different poses.

Registration is required.

Dress to be indoors and also in the day’s weather as the group ventures outside.
