Lepidoptera Farming: The Art of Raising Moths and Butterflies

June 26, 7:30-8:30 p.m.

The West Woods

Tami Gingrich, research assistant in GPD’s Natural Resource Management Department, will share a lifetime of spectacular photographs, as well as tips and techniques for breeding/rearing seven species of giant silk moths. She’s also planning to bring live specimens.

Registration not required.

Moth Madness

June 26-27, 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The Rookery

Tami Gingerich, naturalist Linda Gilbert and other moth experts will monitor mercury vapor and black light stations set up in three different locations/habitats. Ask questions, study these fascinating night-flying insects and bring a flashlight and camera for some great photo ops.

Registration not required.

Paddle Ohio

June 21, 1-3 p.m.

Bass Lake Preserve, Boat Launch Area

Take a relaxing and informative canoe trip in Bass Lake Preserve during the local Paddle Ohio event, newly created by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Watercraft to encourage people to paddle as many state-designated wild, scenic and recreational rivers and water trails as possible.

Chagrin Scenic River protects Spring Brook, a tributary of Bass Lake, which has continually held a population of the Ohio native brook trout since the last ice age. The stream provides the brook trout with a neat optimal habitat.

While enjoying the scenic lake, participants can also count this toward the four paddles they must take before November to earn a free collectible pin; paddle all 20 scenic rivers and water trails in the state to receive a certificate signed by the chief of the Division of Watercraft.

Registration required. Ages 12 and older with adult only.

Solar Day & Solstice Sunset

June 21, 6-9:30 p.m.

Observatory Park

Celebrate the longest day of the year with fun solar experiments and safe viewing of the sun. Experiment with all kinds of solar-powered objects. Visitors will also be welcomed to view the sun safely through park district solar scopes.

Registration is not required for this free, all-ages program.

Ice Age Leftovers on the Landscape

June 27, 1-2 p.m.

The West Woods Nature Center

In addition to the glacial origins of these landforms, naturalist Dan Best will also relate the role glaciers played in the development of Geauga County’s land use history, including agriculture, industry, tourism, wildlife diversity and water resources.

Registration is not required for the presentation; however, registration is required for an afternoon road trip until 5 p.m. to view some local glacial features.
