Musical Showcase

June 25, 7-8:30 p.m.

The West Woods

For eight years, the Maple Town Tune Traders have shared a variety of music: blues, country, classical, vintage pop, Celtic, traditional and modern folk music and rock. The park district is now advertising for an audience that enjoys a relaxing evening of well-rendered music. Admission is free and the setting is informal. Snacks to share are welcome.

As for musicians, 15-minute “open mic” performance spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis each fourth Thursday.

Maple Town Tune Traders provides a gentle audience for child musicians facing a recital, with applause and praise guaranteed from people who celebrate young musicianship.

For more information, call Tune Traders host Dan Best at 440-279-0883.

Boulder Beauty

June 28, 2-4 p.m.

The West Woods

Join in at 9465 Kinsman Road in Russell Township to celebrate geology, glaciers and a one-of-a-kind contest.

Out there somewhere is a cobble full of colorful minerals, lying in a farm field or streambed, covered in soil or sand. Enter it into the upcoming Boulder Beauty Contest, taking place during the family-oriented Glacial Glee with Ice Age Geology program.

Boulder Beauty Contest ribbons and certificates will be awarded in various categories. Complete contest rules posted at http://bit.ly/gpdboulder2015.

In addition to the contest, hands-on activities at the program will include panning for real gold in a baby pool, making a “ice kame sundae,” and thanks to the donation of small boxes from Flambeau Plastics in Middlefield, a free glacial peddle rock collection that you can take home and expand on.

While visiting The West Woods, check out the inspiration for all the fun: Return to the Ice Age, a special exhibit featuring real Ice Age-era bones
