Bird Walk For Beginners

Recognizing that bird watching is the fastest-growing outdoor activities in America these days, Geauga Park District Senior Naturalist Dan Best has scheduled Bird Walk for Beginning Birders May 4 from 1-3 p.m. at Eldon Russell Park, Horwath’s Landing, 16315 Rapids Road, Troy Township.

The program will provide assistance with binocular use, recommendations for choosing a bird guide, sources of regional birding resources, guided observation and tips for identification.

Registration is not required for the free program.

Equine Park Fun

Geauga Park District will hold a naturalist-led Horseback Trail Ride on May 24 at The West Woods in Russell Township.

The 6- to 8-mile ride on the Pioneer Bridle, Music Street and Affelder trails promises to provide plenty of natural history lore so horse and rider may more fully enjoy future rides through woodland and field. Hills, gravel, bridge and stream crossings should be anticipated, as well as spring wildflowers and migratory birds.

Ride times are from 10 a.m. to noon for walking only, and then 1-2:30 p.m. for walking, trotting and cantering; participants may register for one or both trail rides with a lunch break between.

Riders may also register for a more diverse activity: the Trail Horse Nature Challenge on May 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Headwaters Park in Huntsburg Township. (Please enter via the Route 608 Trailer Parking.)

At this program, challenge yourself and your horse on a series of natural trail obstacles and nature questions along park trails, which include hills, gravel, a bridge and stream crossings.

Assigned departure times will be in order of registration. Participants may ride out individually or in pairs at a leisurely pace, since time is not a factor. The course can be completed in an hour or two and then participants may ride the trails on their own. Challenge awards will be presented in both youth and adult divisions.

Helmets are recommended for both programs, and registration is required.
