Constructing Catapults

To illustrate the concept of levers and simple machines, the students in Mrs. Stefancin’s fifth-grade classroom at Notre Dame Elementary School constructed catapults, given a bag of small, ordinary items. The students cheered as each team launched its sugar cube across the room in a competition of which team could have its load travel the furthest.

After collecting data, in terms of each catapult’s fulcrum location, incline and force used, the students mathematically determined why certain catapults launched the cube further than others. The students enjoyed this activity as they were able to construct their own devices, and they were able to launch small items into the air of their classroom.

Dissections in Science Class

This month, seventh-graders participated in a dissection lab dealing with sea stars. The dissection was part an invertebrate unit and is one of multiple dissections that the students will be performing throughout the year.
