Volunteer Help Needed

The Geauga County Department on Aging is in need of volunteers from all over the county to help during the 2013 Geauga Fall Cleanup Days. The event kicks off Oct. 25 and runs through November, weather permitting.

Many seniors can no longer rake their yards, weed flower beds, clean up yard debris or wash windows. This is where volunteers can make a difference. By volunteering just a few hours of time, one can help a senior citizen remain independent and allow them to live in a safe, clean environment.

Volunteers will generally be assigned close to their homes to make the most of their volunteer time. Some volunteers, however, may choose another area in which they would like to work.

Individuals or groups who can help during the fall Clean-up Geauga Days are asked to contact the Department on Aging at 440-279-2130, 440-564-7131, ext. 2130, or 440-834-1856 ext. 2130 and ask for Bob Debevits, home maintenance coordinator, or Bill Phillips, volunteer coordinator, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Generations of Fun

An intergenerational event for all ages will be held Oct. 18, NEOEA Day. West Geauga Senior Center is sponsoring a pancake breakfast and family fun festival.

The day starts with a pancake breakfast at the senior center from 9 a.m. to noon. Breakfast includes games, crafts, face painting and outdoor activities.

Afterwards, visit the Patterson Fun Fest on Mulberry Road.

Tickets are $7 for children 3 to 11 and $10 for youth 12 years and older. Great-grandparents and children under 2 are free.

Tickets are available at the West Geauga Senior Center, 11414 Caves Road, Chesterland or by calling 440-729-2782.

Meal Delivery Drivers Needed

The Geauga County Department on Aging is in need of Home Delivered Meal drivers.

Once trained, volunteers can deliver meals as little as once a month or as often as they would like. Many companies and/or civic groups work as a team, sending different individuals from their organization on a scheduled rotation. Because they alternate the drivers, a different driver can drive each week with the group determining the driving schedule.

The meal routes are delivered Monday through Friday, and usually take between one and a half to two hours from start to finish. Drivers are able to deliver lunch to 10 to 15 homebound seniors each shift.

Drivers must be 18 or older, have a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.

To volunteer, call the Geauga County Department on Aging at 440-279-2130, 440-564-7133 ext. 2130 or 440-834-1586, ext. 2130.
