Understanding Medicare
Geauga Department on Aging has five OSHIIP (Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information) certified staff trained by the Ohio Department of Insurance. The program can help seniors get accurate and impartial information about Medicare, Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D drug plans.
Seniors can have one on one review appointments with GDA staff through Dec. 5. Call 440-279-2130 to schedule an appointment. Appointments are available from Monday through Friday.
Seniors can receive Medicare if they are 65 and older, at any age with a disability, and diagnosed with end stage renal disease (ESRD). There are two options. Option 1 consists of having the original Medicare (part A and B) in addition to also having secondary insurance and Rx coverage. Option 2 consists of Medicare advantage (part C).
To apply for Medicare, one must apply with Social Security or Railroad Retirement during the seven month Initial Enrollment Period, which is three months before one’s 65th birthday, month of one’s 65th birthday or three months after one’s 65th birthday. Seniors are automatically enrolled if they get Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits before Medicare eligibility. If covered under one’s (or spouse’s) current employer group health plan, one can delay enrollment into Medicare Part B.
For more information on Medicare, the Geauga Department on Aging staff will conduct a Medicare 101 presentation, which will cover the basic facts about understanding Medicare. A presentation will take place at the Middlefield Library at 7 p.m. Nov. 5. A second presentation will be held at Bainbridge Library at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 13.
Bainbridge/Chagrin AARP
The Bainbridge/Chagrin AARP Chapter 4527 will meet at 1 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Bainbridge Community United Church of Christ, 17751 Chillicothe Road in Bainbridge Township. The meeting is at a different location because town hall is closed because of Veterans Day. All veterans are asked to wear their military hats and to announce their branch of service at the meeting.
The program is Thanksgiving Bingo, which will be followed by a brief meeting to let everyone know what is happening for the rest of the year.
The holiday party will be held Dec. 2 at the Sun Valley Party Center, 10000 Edwards Lane in Auburn Township. Tickets are $18 for members and $20 for guests and will be on sale at the November meeting or by calling Betty Scholz at 440-338-8321. Deadline for reservations is Nov. 18.
Members and guests are asked to bring items for the Food For Friends food pantry. Especially needed are items for Thanksgiving including canned pumpkin, pie crust mix, bagged stuffing, cranberry sauce and canned green beans.
