Volunteer Help Needed

The Geauga County Department on Aging is in need of volunteers from all over the county to help during the 2015 Geauga Spring Cleanup Days for seniors. The event kicks off April 4.

Many seniors can no longer rake their yards or flowerbeds, weed, clean up yard debris or wash windows. This is where volunteers can make a difference. By volunteering just a few hours of time, one can help a senior citizen remain independent and allow them to live in a safe, clean environment.

Volunteers will generally be assigned close to their homes to make the most of their volunteer time. Some volunteers, however, may choose another area in which they would like to work.

Individuals or groups who can help during the spring Clean Up Geauga Days are asked to contact the Department on Aging’s Sherri Davis at 440 279-2129 or Bob Debevits, home safety and chore coordinator, at 440-279-2130, 440-564-7131, ext. 2130, or 440-834-1856 ext. 2130, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Register For Chester Twp. Senior Trash Pickup

Chester Township Trustees and Chester Road Department are joining forces with the Geauga County Department on Aging for the 2015 Chester Township Senior Trash Pick-Up Days April 13-15.

To register for trash pickup, one must be 60 years of age or older, live in Chester Township and be registered with Geauga County Department of Aging. The Chester Township Road Crew and the Department on Aging will pick up refuse from the senior’s home.

No liquids, paint, or other hazardous materials, construction debris, rocks, yard waste or household garbage will be accepted. A maximum of four tires off the rim and appliances, furniture and tvs will be accepted. All material should be consolidated in strong boxes and items should be kept dry and covered with a tarp if possible.

Only 10 household items per home and the trash should be from the registered senior’s household only. Items must be left outside of home or garage by April 12. Do not leave items curbside.

The senior, or someone 18 years or older that is appointed by the senior, must be home on the day of the pickup and sign a release for the items that will be picked up.

To register, call the Department on Aging at 440-279-2129, 440-279-2135, 440-279-2130, 440-834-1856, ext. 2130 or 440-564-7131, ext. 2130 weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The cleanup is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Boxing with Parkinson’s

The Geauga Department on Aging offers a non-contact Boxing with Parkinson’s class at Ignite Sports & Enrichment Center in Chardon on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9-11 a.m. The focus is on improving overall fitness levels, maintaining a strong healthy body and working on postural imbalances and increasing core strength.

The class is being offered to those recently diagnosed or those with early onset Parkinson’s disease. The goal is to help them improve their quality of life and self-confidence, provide an active support group and a challenging fitness class to help them better cope with their disease.

For more information, call Sandy McLeod at 440-279-2137.
