Students Warm Up the Holidays
The Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin junior class led an initiative to literally spread some holiday warmth to the patients and families at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital.
In a holiday-themed service project, the junior class student council members led an effort to create 24 fleece blankets, which were delivered to families and patients at the hospital. The blankets were delivered by nine members of student council on Dec. 19, and they were distributed to family members and patients at the hospital over the Christmas holiday.
“Often, families come in with a sick child and have had no time, energy, or money to spend on Christmas gifts, so the blankets could be given out to help out those parents and families to make Christmas a bit brighter,” said junior class co-moderator Marcia Pecek.
The blankets were started by class officers and representatives, but the entire school community was invited to participate during a blanket-tying event that included a viewing of the movie “Elf” on Dec. 13. Pecek said the blankets were tied in “record time.”
The idea for the service project was initiated by students who wanted to take advantage of “down time” between the council’s major events in fall and winter: a junior recognition prayer service in October and the winter dance in February.
Pecek moderates the junior class with colleagues Victoria Eby and Erica Bella.
