West G STEM Scholars
More than 1,267 science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students in grades 5-12 exhibited their projects at the 65th annual State Science Day on May 11 at The Ohio State University in Columbus. Congratulations are extended to sophomore Kirstin Boni, who achieved a “Superior” Ohio Academy of Science award, and to juniors Stephen Merriman and Layla Nosek for their ‘Excellent’ Ohio Academy of Science Awards.
The STEM scholars from 279 cities and 301 schools in 71 counties competed for more than $4.5 million in scholarships and awards. Kirstin Boni’s project title was “Enzyme Kinetics: The Application of Calcium as an Activator of Bovine Catalase” Stephen Merriman’s project title was “Drumstick Tip and Rebound” and Layla Nosek’s project title was “Sympathetic Vibrations in Pianos: A Study of Ear Versus Computer.”
“Inspiring the next generation of STEM leaders is critically important to our community and our nation,” said Jeff Wadsworth, Battelle president and CEO.
Lynn Elfner, CEO of The Ohio Academy of Science, stated that, “STEM is a bridge to our future linked by the spans of technology and engineering that rest on the foundations of science and mathematics.”
Kiwanis Scholarship Winners
The West Geauga Kiwanis Club held it’s annual Scholarship Awards dinner on May 14. More than $8,200 in scholarships was awarded to very deserving students.
The following students received awards:
Mary Catherine Drockton received the Charlie Christy Leadership and Community Service award.
Others receiving awards were Steven Joseph Repas, Bailey Kershaw, Shannon Pavsek, Kelli Wright, Marlena Praprost, Sara K. Riedel, Isabella Todaro, Sadie Poe, Josh Egan, Kayli Doll, Abby Fritzsche and Carolyn Matovina.
The West Geauga Kiwanis Club would like to thank all the students who applied for the scholarships and wish them all the best of luck in their future endeavors.
