A Prescription for the Pandemic
The current Covid-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented hardship to our nation and many other countries of the world.
The physical disease itself continues to result in much sickness and death. The economic ramifications of the disease carry job losses, product shortages and higher prices. Restrictions on gatherings and travel cause discouragement and social isolation.
The probable virus “spike,” even into the future, engenders fear and concern. For me, this time has brought bad news, as I have lost something very close to me: my brother.
On April 24, after being hospitalized and on a ventilator for almost two weeks, my older brother, Bob, succumbed to the effects of Covid-19. The experimental drugs were administered, but Bob’s physical body could not be saved from the ravages of the virus. My comfort is found in God’s remedy for man’s sin condition: the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
A couple of years ago, during another health crisis, I was able to find out that Bob was trusting in that saving prescription. In his hospital room, Bob related to me his unrest after a particular struggle about the reality of life and death. During that conversation, I was able to ask Bob if he was trusting in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ for his soul’s salvation.
With a hearty “yes,” Bob gave verbal assent to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the saving solution for man’s soul. Though nothing could be done to save him from the deadly virus, Bob’s soul was healed when he placed his faith in the Gospel.
So, you ask, what is this prescription that all men must know about before they face their inevitable death? In the original language of the New Testament, the word “gospel” means “good tidings.” The Apostle Paul defined that Gospel in I Corinthians 15:3,4 “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”
Again, in Romans 10:9, under divine inspiration, Paul writes, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
This is the good news of the Gospel which can save all men from their sins and send their soul to Heaven.
A prescription does one no good if they do not take it for themselves. We hear about different kinds of drugs which may be effective for Covid-19, but in every case, that drug has to be administered to the patient for him to see the results. And God’s Gospel must be believed on in the heart to save your soul for eternity.
