Bainbridge Township Trustees discussed rising fireworks costs and the possibility of expanding this year’s display during their meeting Jan. 26, as the community looks ahead to celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday.

Trustee Kristina O’Brien suggested officials consider having a larger fireworks show, along with possible additions such as special decorations and an ice cream truck, to mark the nation’s milestone.

“I still remember celebrating 200 years when I was just a tiny tot, so like, this is exciting stuff,” she said.

However, the base cost of fireworks has increased significantly, even before factoring in any extras, noted Fiscal Officer Janice Sugarman.

“Last year, (it) was $17,500 or something,” she said.

This year’s fireworks display would cost $23,000 through American Fireworks, of Hudson, according to the agenda.

“When I saw the ($23,000), I thought, ‘Oh, we already increased it,’” O’Brien said.

Parks and Properties Superintendent Mike Mariola attributed the price hike to tariffs and insurance costs.

“Between the tariffs and the insurance — that’s what’s hurting,” he said. “There’s no commercial fireworks made in the United States. It’s all from overseas.”

Mariola said the township is “fortunate” to work with American Fireworks, noting the company’s owner purchased containers of fireworks before tariff prices increased.

This year’s display will use smaller shells after some residents reported difficulty seeing previous shows from certain locations, he said.

Mariola said he plans to meet again soon with the owner of American Fireworks.

The township plans to split the cost of the fireworks display 60/40 with Auburn Township, added Trustee Jeff Markley.
