Following an executive session July 18, Claridon Township Trustees voted to increase the township maintenance workers’ pay by 9%, Trustee Jonathan Tiber said over the phone July 20.
Following an executive session July 18, Claridon Township Trustees voted to increase the township maintenance workers’ pay by 9%, Trustee Jonathan Tiber said over the phone July 20.
“We found out we were way, way behind all the other (Geauga County) townships,” he said, adding they also voted to increase those wages by 1.75% in 2024, 2025 and 2026.
The maintenance department has one full-time worker, one who works six months a year and one who is part time, Tiber said.
They are paid out of the cemetery, road and buildings funds, depending on what they have been doing that pay period, he said.
The maintenance crew is also happy the township recycle center will be closed as of Aug. 1, Tiber said.
Despite installation of a gate that is locked at night, cleaning up trash left at the site has been onerous.
“They spent a lot of time on that,” he said.
Residents can still recycle their items at the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District’s new center at 12685 Merritt Road in Claridon Township, where electronics and appliances will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays. Household hazardous waste will also be accepted on Fridays.
The collection facility is open from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 17 and Oct. 15 for all the above.
In other business, trustees voted to pay L.A. Rose Paving of Middlefield $32,000 to patch potholes on township roads, Tiber said.
Trustees have decided not to place a new road levy on the November ballot because it costs thousands of dollars to do so and the last two road levies have failed, he said.
Trustees agreed to purchase for $80 each “Entering Claridon Township Settled 1811” signs at the township line on Merritt and Ravenwood roads.
Tiber said they plan to replace the old signs on other township roads, as well.
He said the second annual Get Down with the Town celebration is planned for 5-8 p.m. Aug. 7 at Claridon Recreation Park. A plaque commemorating those who created the park will be dedicated during the event.
