As the 2022-2023 winter season approaches, Geauga County Commissioners took action Nov. 8 in preparation.
Commissioners approved requests for snow and ice control agreements with six townships, which will cover 69 miles of township roads for a total amount of $241,449.
“We set up these agreements ahead of time to share duties on roads that make it more efficient. In some cases, we pay them to plow our roads and other cases, we get paid to plow their roads,” said Deputy Engineer Shane Hajjar.
The agreement to provide snow and ice control for 13.42 miles of township roads for Bainbridge Township Trustees in the amount of $53,065 includes Chagrin Road, Bainbridge Road and Washington Street.
Chester Township’s agreement for snow and ice control includes 15.09 miles of township road coverage for Wilson Mills, Sperry, Mulberry and Caves roads in the amount of $59,668 for the 2022-2023 winter season.
Claridon Township’s agreement for snow and ice control on 9.32 miles of township roads includes Ensign, Forrest (two sections), Hall, Spencer, Stillwell and Taylor Wells roads in the amount of $29,700.
Montville Township’s snow and ice control agreement includes 10.712 miles for Burrows Road, Dewey, Hart, Hautala, Joann, Kile, Murphy, Sun and Whitney roads in the amount of $32,450. And Russell Township’s snow and ice control agreement includes 8.628 miles of township road coverage for Fairmount, Russell and Caves roads in the amount of $34,116.
The final agreement was for snow and ice control in Troy Township on 11.830 miles of township roads that includes Stafford, Fox, Winagle, Patch, Nash, Tilden, Hoover, Grove and Greystone roads in the amount of $32,450.
“It’s based on county roads that the township would have to drive on to service many township roads,” said Hajjar. “If they went from Road A to Road B and they traveled across our road, they would just plow our road when they went by and we pay them for that.”
Hajjar added the engineer’s office is always willing and able to help townships during the winter season.
“Anytime there’s a bind, we definitely try to help each other out. We’ve helped with plowing in intersections or in some cases, salt,” said Hajjar. “There’s definitely cooperation between the county and the township to make sure that the roads are clear and safe.”
In other business, commissioners approved:
