Claridon Township will not be investigating a property on Claridon Troy Road for zoning violations since no resident has filed a complaint on it.
During a regular Claridon Township Trustee’s meeting Feb. 18, Trustee Jonathan Tiber responded to a request for direction from Zoning Inspector Harry Jacob III regarding property owned by Daniel Serge.
Serge had filed a complaint with Jacob about his neighbor’s construction of a storage building across the street from Serge. During a zoning board of appeals meeting, Serge said he operates two businesses, a tree farm and a trucking company, out of his 11887 Claridon Troy Road residence.
His complaint against neighbor and businessman Steve Smetana was about the appearance of the building, which he said doesn’t fit in with the residential neighborhood.
At the Feb. 4 trustees meeting, Jacob said the zoning resolution limits residences to one home-based business and Serge’s business are not on the list of approved in-home businesses.
“What do you want me to do about Mr. Serge?” he asked trustees. “I feel the need to do something.”
Monday, Tiber answered Jacob’s question.
“I would like to say ‘No.’ There is no reason to investigate that property or business. There has not been a single complaint about that property or business. We do not police properties for zoning violations,” Tiber said. “I see no suspicion here, therefore, no reason to investigate this case.”
The other trustees did not object to Tiber’s announcement and the board moved on to other zoning matters.
Trustees also discussed the costs for preparing the north end of Taylor Wells Road for widening and repaving.
Recent estimates for a large culvert under the road as well as smaller ones and driveway pipes for the dozens of driveway pipes needing to be replaced might increase to about $200,000, due to engineering changes to the plans, said Trustee Roger Miller.
The township budgeted about $290,000 for the culverts, pipes and ditches, which will also have to be moved back to allow for a wider road and berm.
Trustees discussed rearranging priorities and spending the majority of funding on replacing culverts and driveway pipes and a lesser amount on ditching.
