Ohio Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel entertained and inspired Berkshire Elementary School students to join his Team Tressel Fitness Challenge in the school gymnasium Feb. 13.

“He captivated our Badger students and staff with engaging remarks, personal stories from his time serving in elected leadership for the State of Ohio and his highly successful coaching career, highlighted with five national championships,” said Jim Crooks in a press release.

Tressel, The Ohio State University Buckeyes head football coach from 2001 to 2010, encouraged second-, third- and fourth-graders to take care of their health and wellness, Crooks said.

“Tressel used student volunteers to help demonstrate the importance of his key areas of focus, including cardio, strength, flexibility, nutrition and sleep as part of a 30-day program challenge targeting third- through eighth-graders across the state,” Crooks wrote, adding students performed push ups, planks, squats and stretches.

The lieutenant governor’s initiative aims to instill lifelong healthy habits and includes a booklet for students to chart their progress and set their own respective fitness goals, he said.

Berkshire Superintendent John Stoddard, elementary school Principal Heather Giel and health and fitness teacher Lisa Starr lead staff and students in the activity-based presentation.

Starr is incorporating the Team Tressel Challenge in the school.

Staff members joined in toward the end of the presentation.

“The district extends its deepest appreciation to Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel for his visit, energy and leadership on the importance of lifelong fitness,” Crooks said.
