Winterfest Returns to Chester Township Nov 29

The Geauga West Rotary Club will host its annual Chester Township Winterfest at 5 p.m. Nov. 29 at Parkside Park — marking the event’s 30th year.

The Geauga West Rotary Club will host its annual Chester Township Winterfest at 5 p.m. Nov. 29 at Parkside Park — marking the event’s 30th year.

“This is a big event for our club,” Rotary President Bob Voss said Nov. 25.

Chester Township Trustees Ken Radtke, Craig Richter and Joe Mazzurco, along with Township Administrator Mark Purchase, will be at Winterfest serving s’mores to residents at the firepits, Voss said.

“People should dress warm because this year, I think we’re going to have a little bit of snow,” Mazzurco said Nov. 25.

The Rotary has begun decorating the park, including installing $25,000 in LED lighting funded by the Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council, Mazzurco said, adding the funding also supports other township projects.

“We had a lot of elves, a lot of helpful elves up there doing our thing to make it look pretty,” Voss said.

A tree lighting will also take place Saturday, with the tree donated by resident Bernie Stark, the Rotary said in a press release.

Chester Township Police Chief Craig Young will be serving up hot dogs again this year, the release said.

“There will be plenty of food and drink for young and old alike (such as) hot chocolate, hot cider, popcorn and cookies served up by the members of the Geauga West Rotary Club,” the Rotary said in the release.

Boy Scout Troop 195 will place luminaries along the walkway and the Girl Scouts of West Geauga Service Unit 773 will sing Christmas carols, the Rotary added.

Santa Claus will be making a cameo again this year for the children, Voss said.

“It should be a nice splash of festive Christmas and holiday decorations,” he said. “It’s just nice when you drive by it (and see) all the lighted garland on the fence and the gazebo and the tree. (It) always gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside.”
