Alexander Allen Smyers
Alexander Allen Smyers, age 91, of Chardon, Ohio, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026.
A devoted father, grandfather and proud United States Army veteran, Alex lived a life defined by hard work, quiet strength and deep love for his family.
Born Nov. 16, 1934, to Elmer Eugene and Marion Ruth (nee Bird) in Cleveland, Ohio, Alex spent his life in Northeast Ohio and was proud to call this area home.
Alex proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam era, a service he carried with quiet pride throughout his life.
Following his military service, he worked for many years as a quality control inspector with Argo-Tech, where he was known for his strong work ethic and attention to detail. Even after retirement, Alex remained active, working for several years as an assistant manager with Ohio’s E-Check program.
In his free time, Alex enjoyed motorcycles and working on cars, hobbies that reflected his love of mechanics and working with his hands. He was a member of the Catholic faith and attended St. William and St. Robert parishes.
Alex is survived by his children, Peggy (Bill) Carpeno, of Willowick, Ohio, Joe Damm, of Chardon, Linda (Mike) Thompson and Timmy Smyers; his sister, Frances (Don) Young, of Eastlake, Ohio; his grandchildren, Josh, Justin, Matt, Mikey and Nick; and his great-grandson, Luka.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carole Smyers; and his parents.
Alex will be remembered for his dedication to family, his steady work ethic and the pride he carried as a United States Army veteran.
Visitation will be held Thursday, March 19, 2026, from 6-8 p.m., with a prayer service beginning at 8 p.m., at Burr Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 116 South St., Chardon. A graveside service will be held on Friday, March 20, 2026, at 11 a.m., at Calvary Cemetery, 10000 Miles Ave., Cleveland, Ohio.
The family has requested memorial contributions be made to St. William & St. Robert Parish, 367 E. 260th St., Euclid, OH 44132.
