Elsie Mae Bertleff

Elsie Mae Bertleff, age 86, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026, at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center.

Born on April 18, 1940, in Toronto, Ohio, Elsie was the beloved daughter of Ruby and Grace (née Rymer) Hayes.

One of 10 siblings, she was raised in Rock Creek, Ohio, and graduated from Rock Creek High School. During her school years, Elsie was a talented majorette and a very bright student.

Throughout her life, she carried a quiet strength and thoughtful presence that left a lasting impression on those around her.

On Feb. 27, 1960, Elsie married James Bertleff and they shared 42 years together, building a life centered on their family. They raised their daughter, Kimberly, in Chardon, Ohio, where Elsie created a warm and loving home. Kimberly was the light of her life and Elsie’s greatest joy was ensuring her daughter was cared for, supported and deeply loved.

Elsie worked as a bank teller and later served with dedication at the Bureau of Support for the Geauga County Courthouse. She was known for her meticulous nature, remarkable organization and attention to detail.

Her home was always immaculate—a reflection of the pride she took in caring for her family and creating a welcoming space where everything had its place. She had a sentimental spirit, carefully preserving cherished items and memories, each holding meaning and love.

Above all, Elsie will be remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her love for her family was steadfast and unconditional and her presence brought comfort, strength and joy to all who knew her.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Kimberly (Dr. Douglas) Leaman, of Montgomery, Ala.; former husband, James Bertleff, of Chardon; her cherished grandchildren, Rachel (Quinn) McClanahan, of Maumee, Ohio, Stephanie (Collin) McAndrew, of Dayton, Ohio, and Kevin (Brianna) Leaman, of Swanton, Ohio; her beloved great-grandchildren, Jensen and Wade; her sister Linda Hayes; her brothers Duane (Kathy Perry) Hayes and Larry Hayes; and many dear nieces and nephews.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters Joan Smith, Phyllis Cocitto, Nancy Nelson, Anita Gordon and Betty Elliott; and her brothers John Hayes and James T. Hayes.

Visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

A funeral service will begin at 12 p.m., with interment to follow Union Cemetery, 3203 Stiles Ave., Rock Creek.
