Frank Zygmunt Murzynski

Ziggy (or Zigfoot), as he was known by friends and family alike, died May 30, 2023. He was 76.

Born on Feb. 25, 1947, in Isny, Germany, to Franciszek Z. Murzynski and Genowefa (nee Jedynak) Murzynski, he grew up in Cleveland, graduating from East High School in 1965.

Shortly after graduation, Ziggy joined the U.S. Air Force and served for four years as an aircraft mechanic, proudly having deployments in Okinawa and Taiwan working on the B-52 and C-17.   After leaving the Air Force, he earned his electrical engineering degree from ITT Tech and worked diligently for the United States Postal Service until retirement in 2010.

Mixing work and his love of sports, Ziggy was a member of both the Municipal Stadium and Jacobs Field scoreboard crew for the Cleveland Indians and Browns for over 30 years.

He loved watching every sporting event his daughters played as they grew up in Newbury Township and, after they graduated, there was not much that could come between him and attending a Newbury Black Knights sporting event.

When he retired at 63 years old, he discovered his love for hiking and completed roughly 700 of the 2,190 miles on the Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain, Ga., to Daleville, Va. Ziggy also enjoyed his yearly trip to Jamaica with his lifelong friends. Known for his fancy footwork, he will be greatly missed on the dance floor. Kochamy Cię.

He was a husband to Mary (nee Sierputowski) Murzynski and is survived by his children, Natalie (Tim) McCarthy, of Worthington, Ohio, Jen Purcell, of Simpsonville, S.C., and Michelle (Tom) James, of Columbia Station, Ohio; grandchildren, Lilly, Noah, Rowan, Stella and Rylee; siblings, Edward (Barb) Murzynski, of Mentor, Johnny Murzynski, of Garfield Heights; along with niece and nephew, Francine Murzynski and Matthew (Taylor) Murzynski.

Ziggy is preceded in death by his parents.
