Herbert Weyland Arp

Born Dec. 29, 1931, near Blue Ridge, Ga., he was the middle child of Virgil and Beedie (nee Patterson) Arp and the last of five siblings who preceded him in death. He moved to Ohio in early 1950.
He worked many jobs, including setting plants at a nursery and working at a nursing home.
Herbert married Erdene Harmon with whom he shared 71 years prior to her death in 2022. Five children were born in this union.
One of the many highlights of his life was owning and working at a gas station and garage with his two brothers, BH and James, for five years. During the day he worked at TRW in the automotive testing lab and nights at the gas station. He wasn’t idle for long, having worked hard all his life and never met a stranger.
Herbert gave his heart and life to the Lord in his 30s. One remembers meeting Herb and hearing the gospel and his faith. His humor, laughter, dedication and love for his family will always be remembered.
For 60 years, he served the Lord spreading the gospel with music, his guitar and singing group he helped form. They performed in churches, senior centers and nursing homes in Ohio and Tennessee. Not to mention music and laughter were at family gatherings, picnics and family reunions. If anyone needed help or aid, Herbert was there to lend a hand without question.
In 1992, after retiring in Ohio, he and Erdene moved to Tennessee, where he resided since 1993 in Benton, Tenn. In retirement, he enjoyed big gardens that he shared with whoever needed what he raised.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Beedie; sister, Vivian (Fred) Thomas; brother BH (Arlene); brother James (Joanna) Arp; sister Gail Long.
Herbert is survived by his children, daughter Peggy (Sam) Truitt, of Florida, son Dale (Gloria), of Benton, son Jeffrey (Susan), of Ohio, daughter Brenda (Josh) McNeely, of Charleston, daughter Rebecca Walters (Mark), of Benton; many nieces, nephews and extended family; and 13 cherished grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life and memorial combined will be held at Higgins Funeral Home in Benton, Tenn. Service will be held Saturday, March 28, 2026, from 5-7 p.m.
