James Cree Burkey

CHARDON TWP. – James Cree Burkey, age 70, of Chardon Township, passed away on June 17, 2021, at David Simpson Western Reserve Hospice House in Cleveland.

He was born Dec. 14, 1950, to Cree Eardean and Betty (nee Hinley) Burkey, in Willougby.

Jim grew up in Willoughby and was a long-time resident of Chardon, where he raised his family.

He owned and operated Northeastern Asphalt. He was chief estimator. He enjoyed watching football with his son and brother.

Jim is survived by his daughters, Aprell Burkey, of Grand River, and Kimberly (Jason) Griffin, of Kirtland; grandchildren, Rachel Schneider, Nikolaus Spotz, Kian Griffin, Maya Griffin and Anthony Mishaga; brother Glenn (Suzanne) Burkey, of Madison; sisters, Beverly Chapman, of Sheffield Village, Linda (Richard) Roskoph, of Parma, and Debbie (Guy) Townsend, of Mentor-on-the-Lake; and former wife and dear friend, Rosemary Burkey, of Mentor.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son, James Cree Burkey II; brother Richard Burkey; and brother-in-law, Homer Chapman.

Family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 23, 2021, from 4-5 p.m., with a memorial service to follow at 5 p.m., at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

A private family burial will be held at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chester Township at a future date.
