John Craig Martin, MD

John Craig Martin, MD, went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 4, 2025, at age 92, passing away peacefully in his bed next to his beloved wife.

Craig, as he was known, was born in 1932 in Toledo, Ohio. He graduated from The Ohio State University and was then drafted into the United States Army. Upon resuming his civilian life, he pursued his passion for medicine, attending medical school at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He completed his surgical residency at the Cleveland Clinic and began his own private practice as a general surgeon in 1965.

Adored by his thousands of patients and respected by his colleagues over his 40 years in the medical field, Craig was not only a phenomenal surgeon but also an extraordinary man who cared deeply for his family.

Craig held a lifelong love of adventure, taking part in speedboat racing, world travel and living an active lifestyle, enjoying his morning laps in the pool and afternoon rounds of golf with his wife.

He enjoyed his last years in the Florida Keys with his beloved best friend and wife of 57 years, Sherry (Sharon Bate). He is survived by her; their daughters, Nicole Martin-Prendergast and Danielle Martin Afnan (Kevin); and grandchildren, Alex and Ashley Afnan.

Private services were held in Florida. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the loving angels who served as Craig’s caretakers in his last year: Vela’s Exceptional Care and Services, P.O. Box 900458, Homestead, FL 33090.

Condolences may be sent to Sherry Martin, 62 Anchor Drive, Unit B, Key Largo, Fl 33037.
