John Owen Hurd
John Owen Hurd, age 78, of Troy Township, formerly of Worthington, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Dec. 12, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Born on Jan. 19, 1946, at Corey Hospital in Chardon, he was the son of Ralph Junior Hurd. and Freida Guttner Hurd.
John graduated from Burton High School in 1963 and was class valedictorian.
After graduating, John went on to attend the University of Akron, earning a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (1967), graduating Summa Cum Laude, and a master’s degree in civil engineering (1970).
He worked as a civil engineer for the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) until his retirement in 1996 and then continued his career as a consultant for Advanced Drainage Systems (ADS) in Columbus.
On March 16, 1984, John married the love of his life, Charlotte, and the two shared 43 wonderful years.
A dedicated community member, John was actively involved with the Burton-Middlefield Rotary Club. He was also an avid sports enthusiast. He loved listening to baseball games on the radio and deeply cherished the time spent with his wife, family, friends and beloved pets.
John will be profoundly missed by his wife, Charlotte; children, Paul (Kerry) Hurd, of Columbus, and Megan (Chris) Zaumeyer, of Troy; grandchildren, Owen Zaumeyer, Nolan, Avery and Ainsley Hurd; and much-loved dog, Frankie, and grand dog, Sparks.
He is also survived by many extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and son Joel.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, Dec. 20, 2024, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., at Sly Family Funeral Home, 15670 W. High St., Middlefield.
