Larry Alan Hess

Larry Alan Hess, age 76, passed away peacefully on Nov. 22, 2025, at University Hospital Cleveland Medical Center, surrounded by his family’s love, just as he lived every day of his life.

Born in Claridon Township, Ohio, to Emil and Viola Ruth (nee Hope) Hess, Larry grew up as one of six boys in a lively, close-knit home where hard work, faith and brotherhood shaped the man he would become.

Larry carried those values with him throughout his life. A devoted member of New Mercies Church, he found comfort, strength and purpose in his faith community. Whether lending a helping hand, offering a listening ear or simply being a steady presence, Larry lived his beliefs quietly but sincerely. His gentle nature and unwavering kindness left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

Larry had a lifelong love for the outdoors and an adventurous spirit that never faded. He enjoyed the freedom of riding motorcycles, the peace of sunny days near the water and the simple joy of fresh air and open spaces.

Some of his happiest memories were made during beach vacations, camping trips and snowmobiling adventures with family and friends. He approached every outing, big or small, with enthusiasm and gratitude.

At home, Larry had two main hobbies. He was a lifelong fan of all things Cleveland sports, especially the Browns and Indians. He celebrated their wins and weathered their losses with the same unwavering loyalty he showed in every part of his life. He was also the family go-to supervisor for any project. With a patient eye and skilled hands, he happily offered guidance during home improvement tasks, teaching by example and always encouraging those around him.

Above all, Larry’s greatest pride and deepest joy was his family. He married the love of his life, Lareda Donaldson, and together they built a home filled with laughter, devotion and enduring love. Their partnership was strong, tender and rooted in faith, mutual love and respect. They raised five children side by side, creating traditions and memories that will be treasured for generations.

Although Lareda passed away on Nov. 17, 2010, Larry carried her love with him always, honoring her through the way he lived and the family they built together.

Larry will be remembered for his kindness, gentle humor, steady presence and the unwavering love he gave so freely. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the family he cherished and the example he set every day. Those who knew Larry will carry his warmth with them always.

Larry leaves behind his beloved children, sons, Troy (Anne) Hess, of Science Hill, Ken., Nicolas (Jennifer) Hess, of Bainbridge Township, Ohio, Scott Hess, of Sarasota, Fla., and daughters, Kellie (Lynn Jr.) Slusher, of Southington, Ohio, and Debra Hess, of Claridon Township, Ohio, each of whom he supported with unconditional love.

He was a proud, devoted grandfather to Zachary (London) Hess, Kayla (Mike) Mariola, Faith Hess, Hope Hess, Amber Christian, Elizabeth (Ben) Stolba, Emma Slusher, Everett Hess, Parker Hess, Tyler Hess, Patrick and Ryan Watts, and Nicki Burke and Beth Warren; and a joyful great-grandfather to 16 cherished great-grandchildren. To each of them, Grandpa was a source of encouragement, wisdom and warmth.

He is also survived by his brothers Curtis (Pam) Hess, of Claridon Township, Dana (Linn) Hess, of Orwell, Ohio, Brian (Lori) Hess, of Claridon Township, and Alan (Donna) Hess, of Dickson, Tenn.

Larry held deep affection for his large extended family and loved and was loved by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lareda; sister in-law, Lois Hess; and his brother Jack Hess.

Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on Friday, Nov. 28, 2025, from 12-3 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m., at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon, Ohio.

A private family interment will take place at a later date.
