Patrick Casseday
Patrick Casseday, age 65, of Chardon, formerly of Newbury Township, passed away from pancreatic cancer on Dec. 24, 2024.
Patrick was born in Kingwood, W. Va., on July 11, 1959, to the late Roger P. Casseday and Lou (nee Gibson) Casseday.
Patrick was a junior-high math teacher for 30 years. His teaching career included positions in Terra Alta, W. Va., Windham Schools and Berkshire Schools, instructing more than 4,000 students. While at Berkshire, he served on two North Central Evaluation Committees helping evaluate the West Geauga and Garrettsville Garfield school systems.
Patrick was also a consultant to Scholastic Math Magazine, the global education, publishing and media empire. He was invited to participate and speak at its editorial advisory board meeting in the lower Manhattan SoHo district world headquarters in 2007.
Patrick also was a longtime coach at five different schools, including Terra Alta, Windham, Newbury, Painesville City and Berkshire. He coached 42 teams in basketball, 31 in volleyball and 13 in softball. He coached 1,275 games, with the opportunity to coach many great athletes over the years. He was inducted into the Berkshire High School Hall of Fame in January 2024.
Patrick started the Berkshire seventh-grade math class chess tournament and would take his chess teams to various Chagrin Valley Conference campuses to compete. He also began the very popular Jr. High Boys Ping Pong tournament at Berkshire Jr. High.
A longtime member of the Newbury United Community Church (NUCC), within walking distance of where he grew up, Patrick served as an usher since 1992, church historian since 1999 and librarian since 2015.
He also was a blood donor for the American Red Cross for many years.
Patrick participated in football, basketball and baseball while at Newbury High School, serving as co-captain in basketball and baseball his senior year.
He also played basketball for New Coal Mining Company in Kingwood, W. Va., and
men’s softball for Manfredi Motor Transit and Chagrin Valley Painting.
Patrick was a big follower of the Cleveland Browns, Indians and Cavaliers and, like many fans, went through many ups and downs over the years in victory and defeat.
In addition to teaching and coaching, Patrick worked several part-time jobs over the years, including groundwork at the Ramsay Estate, picking strawberries at Blister Hill Farm on Pekin Road, custodian at the Energy Exploration Oil and Gas Company on Kinsman Road, and making pallets at Jackson Lumber on Music Street, all in Newbury. He was on the grounds crew at TRW Golf Course (now Fowler’s Mill) in Munson Township, a driver for the Geauga County Public Library, a bartender at the Golden Dawn Restaurant in Youngstown and employed at the Payless Dry Cleaners in Chardon.
Patrick is survived by his wife of 38-1/2 years, Christine (nee Naples) Casseday; brothers, Dan (Lyn) Casseday, Randy Casseday; sisters, Connie (Pete) Badour, Terry (Bill) Schneider; sister-in-law, Nam Sook Casseday; brothers-in-law, Andy Naples (Angela), Phillip Naples (Anne-Marie), Benny Naples, Ralph Naples (Mary Jude), Johnny Naples (Darla); sisters-in-law, Mary Simpson (Jim, deceased), Cathy Naples (Joey), Annie Bako (Bill); and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roger Casseday; paternal grandparents, Ercil and Hilda Casseday; maternal grandparents, Russell and Pearl Gibson; aunt, Genie Casseday; uncle, Ercil Casseday; in-laws, Ralph and Catherine Naples; and special aunt Ann Vlaykovich.
Patrick will be deeply missed by his 98-year-old mother whom he was a caregiver for many years.
Patrick will receive family and friends at the Newbury United Community Church (NUCC) on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2024, from 1-5 p.m., and Monday, Dec. 30, 2024, before the service at 10 a.m. with the service to begin at 11 a.m.
