Paul Clayton Mansfield

Paul Clayton Mansfield, age 90, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a life rooted in hard work, service and quiet generosity.

Paul was born on Oct. 7, 1934, in Newbury Township, Ohio, to Aaron Mansfield and Florentine Leppelmeier. After graduating Newbury High School in 1952, he proudly served his country by joining the United States Army and was stationed in Germany.

Upon returning home, Paul built a life through skilled craftsmanship as a self-employed mason, a trade he practiced with pride and dedication for many years. His strong work ethic was matched only by his love for the land.

In 1967, Paul began making maple syrup, a passion that became a cherished annual tradition. He worked the sugar farm faithfully each year, finding joy in the process rather than the praise. Though maple syrup was a significant part of his life, Paul never sought recognition and participated only minimally in the Geauga County Maple Festival. What mattered most to him was the work itself—and, of course, enjoying the syrup.

Paul was married to his beloved wife, Joan, for the better part of a century, sharing a life filled with partnership and devotion until her passing in 2000. Known for his friendly nature, Paul was always a welcome and social presence wherever he went, easily adding warmth and conversation to any gathering.

He is survived by his sons John Mansfield and Timothy Mansfield.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Mansfield; his son Paul Mansfield Jr.; and his siblings, Eleanor, Bill, George, Arthur “Stub” and Henry.

Paul’s legacy lives on through his family, his craftsmanship and the many seasons spent tending the sugar maples he loved so much.
