All are invited to the unveiling of a new Ohio Historical Marker in Ashtabula

JCI Contractors, Inc., NMS, Inc., and the developer 4716 Main Ave LLC welcome all members of the community to celebrate a new Ohio Historical Marker in their neighborhood.

The marker honors the site of the largest historic redevelopment and adaptive reuse project in Ashtabula County’s history, the former Hotel Ashtabula at 4726 Main Avenue.

A public unveiling of this marker will take place on Tuesday, July 18, at 5 p.m.

Renovations cost $5.2 million, according to Charlie Borsukoff, vice president of JCI Contractors. To offset those costs, NMS was proud to consult on obtaining $639,000 in state historic tax credits and $600,000 in federal historic tax credits, according to Shawn Neece, managing director.

The project began in August 2012 and re-opened the doors in 2014 as home to Signature Health, Inc., a multidisciplinary health practice serving Ashtabula County.

The former Hotel Ashtabula is the tallest building on Main Avenue and fourth tallest in the county, six floors and originally 109 rooms. Built in 1919, it served as a social hub for 45 years and a restaurant for 20, and thanks to these efforts, its historic character remains remarkably intact today.

All throughout construction, JCI worked with the design team at Sandvick Architects, Inc., and the developers to comply with all historical guidelines and ensure material adherence with the Ohio Historic Preservation Office and the National Park Service.

Construction work included exterior masonry restoration, interior demolition and a complete buildout of the 55,000 square-foot interior with all-new HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems.

Restoration highlights include the original mosaic tile floor and lobby windows, a 300-person ballroom (now a large community room), a marble staircase and 89 feet of railing and scroll work, high ceilings, wide hallways, new chandeliers, two custom elevators and restrooms, and 124 new replica windows.
