Kent State Geauga and Regional Academic Center to Kick-Off Rising Scholars Program
A mentorship program for first generation college students in 7thgrade,to begin this Spring in Burton and Twinsburg.
Kent State Geauga and Regional Academic Center will host a kick-off celebration for the Rising Scholars Program that will be introduced locally this Spring. The Kick-off is Wednesday, April 3, 2019, 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.** at the Regional Academic Center, 2745 Creekside Dr., Twinsburg, OH, 44087.The evening will include an overview of the program and provide information on ways to be involved, by David Dees, Ph.D., Dean and Chief Administrative Officer of Kent State Columbiana County, where the program is currently active.
Rising Scholars is designed to give first-generation students from Geauga and Summit Counties a pathway to higher education through mentorship and hands-on career exploration at no cost to participants. The Rising Scholars Program, will consist of mentoring by Kent State students, experience days off-campus that will provide a hands-on approach to a variety of careers and opportunities locally, that will lead to improved graduation rates and post-secondary pathways.
The Rising Scholars Program exists to support the success of a select group of students who have promising academic ability but are not performing to their full potential. When student participants commit to the program, a free Kent State college education awaits them. They will also become the next generation of mentors that “pay back” their community for this generous support.
“I feel that the Rising Scholars Program will provide a great resource for students in the community,” says Robin Dever, Middle Childhood Education professor andprogram coordinatorat KSU-Geauga. “It is our intent that the students who complete the program will be successful in whatever path they choose post-graduation.”
