CARES Offers Tutor Training
April 15, 9 a.m. to noon

CARES, the Center for Adult Reading and Educational Services, will conduct a free tutor training for adults interested in working with adult learners in need of ABLE services (Adult Basic and Literacy Education). Learners are enrolled in the Auburn ABLE Program and attend classes at sites throughout Lake and Geauga counties.

The training session will be held at Auburn’s Technology Learning Center located at 8221 Auburn Road, Concord Township.

Upon completion of the training, volunteer tutors will assist students to improve their basic literacy skills, prepare to take the GED test and develop proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading and writing English. The workshop, related materials, beverages and snacks will be provided. There is an optional book fee of $20.50 to purchase a supplemental training book.

MS Word Basics
April 6, 7 p.m.

The hands-on basics class will walk participants through the ribbon, font styles and saving documents in Microsoft Word. Participants must have basic keyboard and mouse skills.

This program is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Friends Of The Library

Join the annual spring “Look, Lunch and Listen” series on Wednesdays in April. Speakers will begin at noon in the Ekyn room and attendees are invited to bring their lunch. Coffee will be provided. No registration is necessary.

Each week will be a different topic:

• April 6: “Women and Girls along the Silk Road: Struggles and Triumphs in the 21st Century,” with Rachel Anderson, assistant dean, Cuyahoga Community College.

• April 13: “Garden Art: What & How,” presented by Dawn Cryberg.

• April 20: “The Great Locomotive Chase: Civil War’s Most Intriguing Spy Missions” with Harold George.

• April 27: “Lighthouses of Maine,” presented by Karen Beck.

Tax Assistance

Volunteers from AARP will be on hand to help you file your 2015 federal and state taxes. Appointments will be on Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and registration is necessary.

Drop Everything and Read
April 12, 7 p.m.

Celebrate reading and Beverly Cleary’s birthday. Bring a book or borrow one from the library. Snacks and birthday cake will be supplied.

D.E.A.R. programs are held nationwide April 12 in honor of Beverly Cleary’s birthday, since she wrote about D.E.A.R. in “Ramona Quimby, Age 8.”

Books-n-Bingo Blast with Mom
May 7, 2 p.m.

Bring that special lady to play some spring-themed bingo and win fabulous book prizes. Very special refreshments to share with “Mom” will be provided.

NEWBURY LIBRARY STATION

Open House
April 2, 1-3 p.m.

Newbury Library Station will hold a community open house to celebrate its new expanded location inside the Newbury Auditorium building, 14775 Auburn Road. Dedication will be held at 2 p.m.

Guests are invited to tour the new library space, play games, enjoy refreshments and pick up a giveaway. The entrance is on the south side of the building.
