Fun With Project Based Learning
First-grade students at Burton Elementary School participated in a recent hands-on learning experience by visiting Great Lakes Growers and learning about plant and produce growth. Incorporating project based learning into their science lessons, students saw lettuce in various stages of its life cycle, reviewed plant parts and developed an understanding of what a plant needs in order to grow.
Students then learned how a greenhouse helps control the needs of a plant and enjoyed a delicious salad made with fresh lettuce from the greenhouse. The visit helped students gather more information for the driving question of the PBL learning – How can we teach others about plants and their needs?
It was a fantastic learning experience for the students as they saw what they were learning in the classroom in a real-life example in their community. A special “thank you” goes out to Great Lakes Growers for allowing Burton Elementary School students to visit.
First Aid and CPR Training
As part of a new statewide mandate, House Bill 113, all students in the Berkshire Local Schools in grades 7-12 will be trained in first aid skills and certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), courtesy of the health and physical education department. Students will participate in the certification process on Nov. 27, 28 and 30 and will have the process repeated every year in grades 7, 9 and 11.
The opportunity to certify all students comes through a partnership with University Hospitals and the American Heart Association to ensure that each student has necessary lifesaving and preparedness training. The Berkshire Local Schools thanks these entities for their partnership in helping the health and physical education department to deploy the skills that can keep people alive in the event of an emergency.
Grandparents and Veterans Celebrated
In a spirited day full of fun and meaningful activities, Ledgemont Elementary School hosted its recent Grandparents Day and Veterans Day celebration. Inviting more than 200 guests to their elementary building, students had the opportunity of showcasing their special respective family members and honoring those men and women who served the country.
Grandparents had the opportunity to take pictures with their grandchildren and visit their classrooms. Then, in a moving ceremony in the gymnasium, a heartfelt ceremony was held to formally express gratitude to local veterans who served to protect our freedom. A special flag ceremony took place along with patriotic songs and acts of honorarium.
The Berkshire Local Schools sends a very special thank you to the citizens who served our country, many of whom, were welcomed as students’ grandparents as well.
