Dr. Division Day
On Feb. 6, third-graders at Ledgemont Elementary School participated in Dr. Division Day, an all-day learning activity featuring math and language arts concepts involving division, but with a fun, medical-themed twist. Both third-grade classrooms were transformed into “exam rooms” with donated hospital-themed decorations, including a plastic sheet over the doorway and blue exam table sheets covering the student’s desks. Teachers wore medical scrubs and white lab coats, while students wore donated surgical gowns and masks to complete their doctor outfits. Math activities included “Doctor’s Office Division,” where students completed division word problems involving a different patient story. Students learned about contractions with a variety of learning stations including “Surgery Station,” which required them to cut words apart and tape them back together with Band-Aids to form contractions. Altogether, the students and their teachers had a blast being a “doctor” for the day while learning.
Winter Athletics Teams Earn High Marks
In addition to the academic and classroom accolades that are often reported to the community, the Berkshire Local Schools’ winter athletic teams have recently experienced a great deal of success.
The Berkshire High School varsity wrestling team earned a third place finish in the Valley Division of the Chagrin Valley Conference. Senior Jarrod Malkus (145 pounds) and freshman Lucas Stoddard (170 pounds) made a strong impression by becoming individual champions in their respective weight class. Other Berkshire students placing included James Klingman, who finished in third place (106 pounds), Josh Tribuzzo, who finished in fourth (113 pounds) and Ryan Ford, who finished in fifth (195 pounds). Congratulations to these top finishers and to varsity wrestling coach Adam Lange.
The Berkshire Junior High School wrestling team won the Chagrin Valley Conference Championship, and featured a number of individuals placements, including the following: Colin Hering, second place (80 pounds), Joey Romano, first place (86 pounds), Jacob Landrus, third place (92 pounds), Johnny Heiden, fourth place (98 pounds), Alex Munn, first place (110 pounds), Logan Jezewski, second place (116 pounds), Josh Brown, first place (128 pounds), Maddex Ciancibello, fourth place (134 pounds), Lucas Luoma, second place (160 pounds), Issac Hutchinson, fifth place (172 pounds) and Aden Hatcher, third place (205 pounds). Congratulations to the junior high wrestling program and coach Kris Cowgill on such a strong finish of the season.
Finally, the Berkshire boy’s seventh-grade basketball team finished the regular season with 12 wins and three losses, good for co-champions in the regular season of the Chagrin Valley Conference. Congratulations to the team and coach Pat Casseday.
In all, these winter athletics teams give student-athletes the opportunity to showcase valuable leadership, teamwork and communications skills, which go hand-in-hand with the overall educational experience promoted in the Berkshire Local Schools.
