BHS Hosts Gala Premiere Event
The Berkshire Local Schools will host a gala premiere event for the Berkshire graduating Class of 2020 at the Mayfield Road Drive-In Theater, 12100 State Route 322 on May 27 to view a special virtual commencement video beginning at 9 p.m.
Each graduating senior will be given one ticket for a passenger vehicle due to state ordered social distancing requirements by current public health orders.
Doors will open at 8:30 p.m. for all ticketed participants who will be required to remain in their cars during the entire event and parked in every-other parking space to allow for social distancing.
Once underway, in-car guests will have the opportunity to watch a pre-recorded video compilation of the graduating members of the Class of 2020 who will be taped in advance of the gala premiere event clothed in cap and gown and walking across the stage at Berkshire High School.
The video compilation will also feature separately taped speeches by both valedictorians, salutatorian and remarks from Superintendent Stoddard and Principal King. The taping will be conducted on May 11 and 12 courtesy of G-TV, which will arrange the taped segments into the graduation ceremony video.
Mayfield Road Drive-In will be offering concessions via its concession window with social distancing guidelines to be enforced. Restrooms will be available and routinely sanitized throughout the evening.
The development of this plan has emerged from the dedication of the staff of the Berkshire Local Schools who very much desire to provide the Class of 2020 with a dignified commencement opportunity while abiding by the recent directives issued just last week by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Education.
Please remain on the lookout for more information as we approach the May 27 event. Thank-you for everyone’s continued support of the Berkshire Local Schools.
Earth Day Celebration
As a way to remain environmentally engaged and learning valuable science hands-on skills, Berkshire Science students were encouraged to celebrate Earth Week and the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Several student assignments and activities took place. Students in Mrs. Ritt’s environmental science courses participated in a nature photo contest. The two winners included an image of a red tailed hawk and baby birds. In addition, Mr. Keller’s biology classes participated in an outdoor cleanup to help spruce up the community and remove errant debris and trash to improve the neighborhoods. Mrs. Maske’s chemistry students even researched ways to fight climate change on manure digesters and capturing carbon and made infographics on their findings. Berkshire students were readily engaged in the celebration of Earth Day’s 50th anniversary, and participated in activities that are certain to keep them environmentally focused for years to come.
Students Learn About Weather Creatively
Burton Elementary School second-grade students have been busy working on their project based learning skills by developing projects that help their understanding of the weather around them. Various reading assignments, engaging experiments and the actual creation of students’ own respective tools for modeling weather patterns have been created. Some of the inventions for measuring the outdoor elements include a weather vane and a measuring cup for rainfall.
The assignments and the students’ response to them are quite impressive. In addition, blending an element of enhanced creativity, students also thoughtfully created acrostic poems about the weather with simplicity and meaning.
