Learning Resource Gift Awarded
Burton Elementary School science teacher Amy Hochschild was recently sponsored by the Geauga County Farm Bureau with a $500 gift to advance her real-life lessons regarding soils and fertilizers. As one of only two schools in Ohio to receive them, Mrs. Hochschild’s sixth-grade students will be enjoying soil science activities to help them learn about how soil properties, nutrients and fertilizers work together in people’s lives.
The kits were awarded to celebrate National Agriculture Day on March 23. Included are Nutrients for Life resources and soil science activities. There are lab materials for testing soil porosity, soil permeability and NPK fertilizers, including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. There are also soil samples from the different regions of the country so students can see how different soils are in different areas, and they can learn what ingredients make those soils appear as they do.
The Berkshire Schools thanks Katie Nainiger, of H2Know, for recommending Burton Elementary for the program, along with Mandy Orahood, the organization director of Geauga Farm Bureau; and Kristen Sirna, trustee of the Geauga Farm Bureau. The school looks forward to sharing the experiences of the activities along the way.
