Partnership with Kent State Geauga
Students who are part of the Badger Lab organization continue cultivating new ideas, initiatives and programs, such as a new partnership with Kent State Geauga Campus. Helping with the Kent State’s Flash Bistro, Badger Lab high schoolers are helping to make coffee and learning about the brewing process, develop management, leadership and financial skills.
In addition to actually serving the students and staff at Kent State Geauga, Badger Lab students are also honing their people skills, learning how to work as a team and increasing their identity in the community. Establishing the partnership to help with the Flash Bistro is just one step in the direction of growing the collaboration with Kent State Geauga.
CPR and First Aid Training
Anyone walking down the 100-wing hallway at Berkshire High School earlier in December may have heard the song “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees playing aloud from Mr. Meyers’ health classroom. Students were not practicing their disco moves, but instead learning and practicing how to save a life. Students were taught how to recognize a cardiovascular emergency, the importance of performing high quality CPR and how to use an AED for defibrillation. Participating students went through adult, child and infant medical emergency scenarios and practiced and refined their CPR/AED skills.
The learning unit also covered how to recognize and provide care in choking emergencies by instructing students how to perform abdominal thrust and back blows on different aged populations. Students also learned how to apply first aid to wounds and lacerations by using direct pressure, tourniquets and bandage wraps.
After a week of learning and practicing their skills confidently in class, University Hospitals EMS Institute visited the classes and tested the students. The students earned their Heartsaver K-12 CPR cards free of charge provided by UH, which are good for two years.
Medical Assisting Certificate Available
Berkshire High School announces an opportunity for students to take part in a three-semester medical assisting certificate program through a partnership with Kent State University. Medical assistants work alongside physicians, mainly in outpatient or ambulatory care facilities, such as medical offices and clinics. They perform administrative and clinical duties in addition to serving as a patient liaison and a member of the patient-centered medical home team. Best of all, students will have a position waiting for them upon graduation from Berkshire High School. Estimates include approximately 104,000 job openings expected each year and continued grow 18 percent by 2030.
The Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, which are the main regional employers, both have tuition reimbursement programs for their employees pursuing a medical-related degree. Students can obtain further medical degrees through no or little cost between the College Credit Plus courses they take in high school and having their tuition reimbursed after high school graduation for medical-related classes while they work as a medical assistant.
