Students Win Statewide Stock Market Competition
Chagrin Falls High School Financial Literacy and Business Management courses participated in the SIFMA Stock Market game run by the Alpaugh Family Economics Center at the University of Cincinnati that included 292 high school teams and a total of 522 teams K-12 across the entire state of Ohio. Teams are given $100,000 to invest in stocks, bonds and mutual funds within the New York Stock Exchange and compete within a 10-week period from Oct. 7 to Dec. 14 to see which team has the highest portfolio value in the end.
Sophomore Jacob Benzel and junior Greg Perry finished first overall out of 522 teams in K-12. Their team finished with a portfolio value of $137,155.40 for a return on investment of 37.2% and outperformed the S&P 500 by 29.6% during their 10-week period. Jacob and Greg won $500 plus a $150 Amazon gift card and will have the chance to compete in The Portfolio Challenge on May 1, 2025, at the University of Cincinnati. They will have a chance to win additional prizes and scholarships to the University of Cincinnati
Seniors Finn Johnson and Cannon Pierce finished third out of 292 high school teams. Their team finished with a portfolio value of $130,374.21 for a return on investment of 30.4% and outperformed the S&P 500 by 22.82% during their 10-week period. Finn and Cannon won $100 for their finish in the competition.
In the High School Region, Chagrin Falls High School led the way and placed seven teams in the top 25, with Blanchester and Lebanon high schools having the second most teams in the top 25 with three each.
