Auburn Signing Day

Congratulations to over 20 Kenston High School students who participated in the Auburn Career Center Signing Day held on April 19 at Kenston High School. Mr. Mitchell, Auburn Career Center’s director of high school, along with, Mrs. Gordon, the enrollment specialist, shared with the students the opportunities that await them next year at Auburn Career Center. Among the many opportunities, they reminded the students that they have the opportunity to work on projects, have leadership roles, meet new friends and earn college credit or attain an internship.

Kenston High School Principal Tom Gabram shared with the students how proud he is of their decision to participate in classes at Auburn Career Center. He told them to be disciplined and determined as they would pay in dividends. Also present at the event from Kenston High School were Assistant Principal Matt Watts and Guidance Counselor Ray Kimpton who echoed Gabram’s pride for the students.

KIS Purple Star Military School

The Ohio Department of Education has recently named Kenston Intermediate School a Purple Star School. The Purple Star designation recognizes a school for its commitment to serving students and families connected to the U.S. Armed Services. The designation is awarded for three years, after which the school can apply for renewal. Kenston Intermediate School joins Kenston Middle School and Timmons Elementary School in being recognized as Purple Star Schools.

VIP Day

Timmons Elementary School hosted “First Grade VIP Day” on April 19. Very Important People (VIP) Day provides students with the opportunity to share with their special guests about their school day. During the event, students go over writing pieces from the school year, play math games that reinforce math skills and read poems that feature their developing phonics and reading skills.

Fine Arts Showcase

Kenston Schools will host its annual Fine Arts Showcase from April 29 through May 2 from 6-9 p.m. in the Kenston High School gymnasium. The showcase will highlight the district K-12 visual art show and instrumental and vocal performances by the high school and middle school bands and choirs.

Musical performances will be every evening at 7 p.m. in the high school’s Robert A. Lee Auditorium. On April 29, the seventh- and eighth-grade choir will perform. The seventh- and eighth-grade band will showcase their talents on April 30. The high school band concert is May 1. The showcase will conclude with the KHS choir concert on May 2.

Bus Driver Safety Road-E-O

On April 20, Kenston Schools hosted the Northeast Region 2024 School Bus Driver Safety Regional Road-E-O.The School Bus Driver Safety Road-E-O is a friendly competition between school bus drivers that includes a driving course with a railroad crossing, a one-way road, maneuverability and other occurrences that may occur while they are driving. Each participant must also complete a written test. The tests are designed to increase their operational and safety skills. Additionally, participants who score 80 percent or higher in total points may use this event for their recertification.

Participating this year were 18 local schools, including Ashtabula Area City Schools, Boardman Local Schools, Champion Schools, Chardon Local Schools, Crestwood Local, Green Local Schools – Summit County, Hudson Schools, James A. Garfield Schools, Kent City Schools, Lowellville School District, Nordonia Hills City Schools, Poland Schools, Ravenna City Schools, Revere Local Schools, Stow-Munroe Falls City Schools, Streetsboro City Schools, Struthers City Schools and West Branch Local Schools. Thank you to Chagrin Falls Exempted Village Schools for allowing the use of the transit buses to complete driving portions of the tests.

Nine participants placed at the event with the top six going to the state competition on May 4 in Hilliard, the other three are alternates. Winners were Laurie Woolley, second place from Poland Schools; Rachel Payne, third place from Green Local Schools; Ryan Dunn, fourth place from Struthers City Schools; Zach Kelly, fifth place from Revere Local Schools; Roger Rodhe, sixth place from Crestwood Local; Jennifer Mertz, ninth place from Boardman Local Schools; Desire Corron, eighth place from Ashtabula Area City Schools; Jasmine Phillips, first place from Kent City Schools; and Mark Reer, seventh place from Kent City Schools.
