Senior Honors Ceremony
Members of NDCL’s class of 2022 have been accepted to 131 colleges and universities nationwide and have been offered more than $20 million in scholarships, Principal Joseph A. Waler proudly announced during the school’s Senior Honors Ceremony.
The ceremony recognized dozens of seniors for their scholastic and other accomplishments over the past four years, including seniors Brooke Begovic and Antonio Vitale, who earned the Top Scholar Award for having the highest grade point averages in the class.
For exemplifying the mission of NDCL in their lives, seniors Kate Kaprosy, Caden Linnert, Vincent Mickey and Courtney Thomas received the Living the Truth in Love Award.
Seniors Sarah Boyle and Mark Petzing were honored with the Sisters of Notre Dame Distinguished Graduate Award. Their names will be inscribed in a book of recognition at the SND Motherhouse in Rome.
Senior Thomas Welsh received the Sister Jacquelyn Gusdane Service Award in recognition of her service that impacts, inspires and transforms the world. Sister Jacquelyn served as NDCL president from 2007-2017.
Seniors Ryan Moskal and Elizabeth Znidarsic shared the honors as NDCL’s Athletes of the Year for 2021-22.
Prayer for Class of 2022
For the first time since 2019, the entire school community gathered with parents and other relatives of the senior class for an enthusiastic, spirit-filled celebration of NDCL’s traditional Baccalaureate Mass.
Because of COVID-19 restrictions, there was no Baccalaureate Mass in 2020. NDCL celebrated last year’s Baccalaureate in the evening with only the graduates and their parents attending.
The prelude to the liturgy featured a slideshow of the 173 members of the class of 2022.
As the mass began, senior Antonio Vitale addressed the congregation with a reflection based upon the words of the NDCL alma mater.
“It would be easy to take all that has happened on our journey through high school and keep it as memories in the backs of our heads, but it is another thing to learn from these experience and to continue to live out those lessons in our daily lives,” Antonio said.
“Those memories will provide comfort and joy that we can reminisce on and use to find what we truly care for and about, just as Mary did, reflecting on all that she experienced and pondering it in her heart. Those lessons of faith and friendship will help support us in our future relationships,” he continued.
“I encourage all of you to work toward becoming the best version of yourself you can be, the person whom God calls you to be. Take risks, make the most out of every situation, and try to say yes whenever you can.”
Living the Truth in Love
In a ceremony following NDCL’s Baccalaureate Mass, President Michael Bates and Principal Joseph A. Waler presented the prestigious Living the Truth in Love Award to 12 students who exemplify the mission of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin.
The Living the Truth in Love Award is the highest honor NDCL presents to any student. Four students from each grade receive the award, which is based upon nominations submitted by teachers, counselors, and administrators. Award recipients’ photos hang in the school’s main corridor for a year.
Seniors Kate Kaprosy, Caden Linnert, Vincent Mickey and Courtney Thomas received the Living the Truth Awards for the Class of 2022 during the Senior Honors Ceremony on May 9.
Annual Powderpuff Game
Under a spectacular sky on a perfect spring night on May 13, the juniors and seniors began the celebration of the end of the 2021-22 school year with the annual powderpuff football game on Lozick Field in Lion Stadium.
With boys serving as their coaches and the bleachers filled with cheering parents and classmates, the junior and senior girls battled it out on the gridiron in a friendly rivalry game of flag football. Last week the tables were turned as the girls coached the boys in NDCL’s first-ever powderpuff volleyball game.
The seniors won Friday night’s game, which was organized by our Future Business Leaders of America Club. Business teacher Greg Schmidt advises the group.
Inspirational Video Celebrates Labre Ministry
After winning last fall’s Chipotle Team Challenge promotional video contest, NDCL has been sharing its bounty of more than $5,000 in burritos and other Chipotle menu items with the adults and children served through our weekly Labre Ministry with the poor and homeless.
Of course, the food is only a small part of the story. Through Labre, students form relationships and learn life lessons that powerfully and poignantly reflect Catholic social teaching on solidarity and the dignity of every person as a child of God.
Director of Admissions Michael Suso ’03 worked with Dom Mann ’19 of Dom Mann Productions to highlight these relationships and lessons in an inspirational video celebrating the school’s Labre Ministry, which recently marked its 300th consecutive weekly visit with the poor and homeless since the ministry started here in 2019.
The Labre Ministry takes its name and inspiration from Saint Benedict Joseph Labre, patron saint of the homeless.
Academic Accolades
During NDCL’s daily announcements broadcast on May 19, assistant Principal Denice Teeples shared a series of academic awards earned by freshmen, sophomores and juniors during the 2021-22 school year.
The impressive list of achievements included awards from local and state organizations as well as NDCL academic letters. Students earn academic letters for achieving at least a 3.7 GPA for any three quarters of an academic year.
Athletic Department Summer Camps
NDCL’s Athletic Department will offer 14 different summer camps for students in elementary and middle school. More than 100 campers have already reserved their spaces for a great summer experience in Lion Country.
The summer schedule includes two football camps, three baseball camps and two basketball camps. Coaches will also lead camps for tennis, softball, cheerleading, soccer, lacrosse, wrestling and volleyball.
