Delegation from UAE Embassy visits NDCL

Last week a delegation from the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Washington, D.C., visited the NDCL campus to begin building bridges between cultures in a shared effort to create a more peaceful world.

Students, teachers, administrators and board members joined the Emiratis in the O’Brien Center for a special screening of “The Peace Visit,” a National Geographic documentary chronicling Pope Francis’ historic visit to Abu Dhabi in February. Pope Francis is the first pope in history to visit the Arabian Peninsula.

The documentary fueled small-group discussions facilitated by social studies department chairperson Molly Schneider and social studies teacher Lindsey Nicholson. Together, the Emiratis and NDCL representatives explored the themes in the “Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together” signed by Pope Francis and Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, the grand imam of al-Azhar, during the Pope’s visit to the UAE.

“The discussions provided our students with a real-world opportunity to consider the role they play in that world and in their interactions with others,” explained Michael Bates, Notre Dame Schools president. “The visit of our friends from the UAE reflects and advances our mission to educate leaders to transform the world, as Jesus did, by living the truth in love.”

The Emiratis’ visit follows the announcement earlier this fall of a $250,000 gift from the embassy to support NDCL’s classroom renovation initiative. While in Chardon, members of the UAE delegation explored possibilities for ongoing connections and relationships with NDCL students and educators.
