New School Year

The Student Activities Board continued NDCL’s celebration of the start of the new school year with Restore the Roar Week, which included themed dress downs, special contests and treats at lunch and even a return visit from the therapy dogs of Rescue Village.

Believe in Ohio

NDCL students had more winners and alternates in this year’s Believe in Ohio state competition than any other high school in Ohio. Only 18 of more than 1,300 high schools in Ohio won awards in the competition.

Seniors John Cesen, Vince Mickey and Brandon Preseren won a $10,000 scholarship for their project titled “The Cleanstrument,” an ultrasonic device that sanitizes musical instruments of potential pathogens. John, Vince and Brandon also won a $1,000 scholarship in the regional competition last spring.

Seniors Zoe Allison, Abby Bouton, Liz Brey, Cailin Hyslop, Vivian Ha and Kaitlin Tabernik have been named alternates in the Believe in Ohio state competition. They previously won $1,000 regional scholarships.

Abby, Liz, and Cailin designed a hand sanitizer station that uses sensing technology to release a mist sanitizer. Vivian, Zoe and Kaitlin developed a wifi signal tracking device that uses mapping technology to color-code signal strength across a room.

Alternates will learn in the coming weeks if they will share in the $275,000 in scholarships to be awarded by the program this year.

Funded by the State of Ohio through the Department of Higher Education and operated as a program of The Ohio Academy of Science, Believe in Ohio is a STEM and entrepreneurship program that teaches students how to commercialize products and services and create innovation-driven business plans. Science teacher Evan Fritz coordinates NDCL’s participation in Believe in Ohio.
