Believe in Ohio

Three members of the class of 2021 join the nine current students featured in last week’s “On-Lion” for winning top awards in this year’s Believe in Ohio state competition.

Zachary DeRespiris, Evan Fonash and Mario Misiti will share a $10,000 scholarship for their award-winning STEM commercialization plan for aerobic success enhancement masks (ASEM). The sophisticated devices maximize athletic workouts by enabling users to adjust their aerobic capacity by controlling oxygen intake with a motorized ventilation system.

NDCL had more winners in the statewide competition than any other high school in Ohio. Only 18 of more than 1,300 high schools in Ohio won awards this year.

Funded by the State of Ohio through the Department of Higher Education and operated as a program of The Ohio Academy of Science, Believe in Ohio is a STEM and entrepreneurship program that teaches students how to commercialize products and services and create innovation-driven business plans. Science teacher Evan Fritz coordinates NDCL’s participation in Believe in Ohio with assistance from academic coach Tony Hodun.

Freshmen Retreat

On Sept. 3, the school’s 180 freshmen focused on Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin’s core value of community by helping each other tackle the challenges of the low-ropes course on NDCL’s beautifully wooded campus.

Seniors from the Certified Peer Educator program served as retreat leaders to break open scripture readings after each challenge activity. The seniors helped the freshmen reflect on the power of Christian community so that they can support each other for the next four years of high school.

The day ended with a joyful celebration of Mass with Father Jay McPhillips, pastor of Saint Helen Church in Newbury Township. Fr. Jay reminded the students of the wonderful opportunity they have to attend a school where they can come to know Jesus.

“You can do great things with your lives if you always remember that you matter to God,” he said. “How you live, the choices you make, and how you treat others matter as you strive to become your best self – the self God intends you to be.”

Director of Campus Ministry Halle McKeon and Director of Student Leadership Ben Lozar ’09 coordinated the retreat.

Congressional Art Competition

Congressman David Joyce’s office recently announced that senior Sarah Boyle won third place in the annual Congressional Art Competition.
Sarah’s digital image titled “Casually Glam” features her friend and classmate Isabella Atkinson.
“Each and every year I am amazed by how artistically talented our students are here in northeast Ohio,” commented Congressman Joyce. “I want to thank all the students who submitted an entry, as well as the parents and art teachers who have helped foster their love of the arts.”

Sarah’s work will hang in Congressman Joyce’s district office for the next year.

NDCL Shares Prize with Homeless

Thanks to the creativity and school spirit of students, staff and alumni, NDCL is among five schools to win the Chipotle Team Challenge, a promotional video contest that offered free burritos for up to 30 teammates every week for 15 weeks.

Rather than entering an individual athletic team in the contest, NDCL chose to enter as an all-school team — and to extend that team to include the adults and children the school serves through its Labre Ministry with the poor and homeless. NDCL will distribute its bounty of burritos to its Labre friends on its weekly visits every Tuesday evening.

“We decided to transform the contest to benefit others, not ourselves,” explained Assistant Director of Admissions Pete DeMichele, who worked with Admissions Director Michael Suso ’03 and a team of students on the project. Dom Mann ’19, of Dom Mann Productions, donated his expertise for the filming and production of the school’s award-winning video.
