NEOSEF and Ohio Science Day

NDES congratulates all of its student participants in the Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair (NEOSEF) and Ohio Science Day.

At NEOSEF, held March 12-15 at Cleveland State University, eight-grader Meghan Bhanoo placed second and eighth-graders Molly Gaugler and Mark Petzing placed third. Meghan also received $25 for Best Electrical Related Engineering Project at Ohio Science Day held on March 17 at University of Akron.

Students qualified for NEOSEF and Ohio Science Day at NDES’ 21st annual Science and Engineering Fair held this past January.

Alien Genetics

Eighth-graders in Mrs. Casie Long’s science class are learning about genetics and how dominant, recessive and hybrid traits affect the traits of an organism. To illustrate these concepts, students were tasked with “breeding an alien.” Students worked in pairs to build a 3-D model based on the traits of their alien offspring.

Rain Gutter Regata

With high-powered fans and simulated streams, first-graders in Mrs. Halle Davis’ STEM class competed to see whose sailboat traveled fastest. Using their practical knowledge of weight, hydrodynamics and aerodynamics, students designed sailboats made using styrofoam, straws and paper. They then tested, tweaked and retested their construction in an effort to build the fastest sailboat.

‘Paws for Books’ Book Fair

NDES hosted its annual spring Scholastic Book Fair with a special guest appearance from Clifford, the Big Red Dog. Adding to the special day, first-grade students invited a special guest to join them for lunch and view the vast assortment of books with their “loved ones.” Students in preschool through grade 8 also had a chance to view and purchase the latest books as well as participate in games and contests – all to raise funds for the library.
