National Merit Recognition

The National Merit Scholarship Program has notified three NDCL students that they are among the top 50,000 scorers out of more than 1.5 million juniors who took last fall’s Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT).

Because of their outstanding performance on the PSAT, Vincent MickeyCourtney Thomas and Antonio Vitale will qualify as National Merit commended students, semi-finalists, or finalists. Those prestigious designations will not be announced until September.

“Vince, Courtney, and Antonio placed in the top 3 percent of all students who took the PSAT throughout the United States,” explained Principal Joseph A. Waler.

“Their outstanding achievement opens up many doors of opportunity for them and serves as a bellwether of the strength of our college-preparatory curriculum and instruction – even during the COVID-19 pandemic,” he added.

Youth Leadership Program

Three NDCL students celebrated their graduation the evening of May 5 from Leadership Lake County’s Junior Leadership Program.

Sophomore Jane Koci and juniors Caden Linnert and Rachael Debevec worked with other students and adult community leaders to hone their own leadership skills so that they can engage more fully in the local civic community. They participated in monthly program days that provided students with a behind-the-scenes look at life in Lake County through on-site visits, guest speakers and experiential learning activities.

For their leadership project, Vince, Rachael and Jane constructed a wellness garden for the residents of Tapestry Senior Living Community in Wickliffe.

Students interested in participating in next year’s Junior Leadership Program should contact their NDCL counselors.
