Kindergarten students at St. Helen School along with their teacher, Theresa Charmley, celebrated Johnny Appleseed’s birthday last week. While learning about Johnny Appleseed and his love for apples, the students also explored, described and compared different varieties of apples. Johnny Appleseed’s birthday is Sept. 26, so the culminating activity was making a fall time favorite food, homemade applesauce for his birthday celebration. The aroma of apples and cinnamon filled the school.
On Sept. 29th, sixth-graders took advantage of the beautiful weather by having their lesson outside. In science class, they have been learning about the scientific method and how every scientific investigation begins with careful observation, which generates a question.
Middle school science teacher Natalie Hudak challenged students to observe carefully and brainstorm questions as they walked around the school grounds. Students were then guided in evaluating which types of questions could be answered through scientific investigations.
