Rotary Donates Dictionaries

The Geauga West Rotary Club once again donated dictionaries to students at Lindsey and Westwood elementary schools. Traditionally a third-grade activity, this year the district asked that the dictionaries be given to the second-graders because it now fits into that curriculum. The club decided to give them to the current third-graders at Lindsey Elementary School and also provided dictionaries to the second-graders at Westwood Elementary School.

Students in fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade that were formerly a part of the Newbury Local Schools will also receive a dictionary from the club. Students were encouraged to sign up for the Imagination Library to receive free books.

Learning with Owl Pellets

Fourth-grade students at Lindsey Elementary School used owl pellets to expand their learning in science. Mr. Jim Croff’s classes each dissected an owl pellet to find animal bones and other interesting items from the byproducts of the owls.

According to Mr. Croff, “This owl pellet activity connects to food chains, predator vs. prey, animal adaptations, and even fossils. An owl pellet is like a mini-archeological site, since the students need to carefully ‘dig’ for the bones of a once-living organism. Students each get their own owl pellet, tray, and dissection tool. I have been doing this activity for many years with the generous help of the Lindsey and Westwood PTOs.”
