April 17-23, 2020

The following is a sampling of the calls handled by the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office April 17-23, 2020. In total, the sheriff’s office handled 228 calls during this period.

AGENCY ASSIST

April 18

12:50 p.m., Mentor Avenue, Mentor. K-9 requested at UPS store for suspicious package. Worker noticed a package ticking after he moved it into the shipping room. Package was a prepaid drop-off and left by an unknown female. K-9 Argo deployed and searched the area. Did not alert to anything in the area or building. Bomb techs x-rayed the package and it was discovered it was the ignitor to the table top fireplace pushed inside the box making the ticking noise. Package was reopened and the battery removed.

April 19

7:46 a.m., Mayfield Road, Huntsburg. Make contact with someone at the house. 18-year-old male taken to the ER last night because he was intoxicated. He needs a ride home. Message delivered to brother-in-law.

ANIMAL PROBLEM

April 22

4:22 p.m., Bundysburg Road, Middlefield. Someone shot one of his alpacas. Caller said he thought alpaca was sick, but company that picked up dead animal found a bullet hole in its rear quarter. Caller thinks one of his Amish neighbors shot it by accident, but has no proof. He also said he has an ongoing issue with Amish trespassing on his property to hunt and cut trees. Caller said every time he puts up “No Trespassing” signs they get taken down. Caller advised to put signs back up and call when people are on his property without permission.

ASSAULT

April 19

12:36 p.m., Merritt Road, Munson. Post lobby. Female wants to report her ex-boyfriend spit in her face on Friday night at a mutual friend’s home in Kiwanis Lake.

BURGLARY

April 20

1:22 a.m., Cedar Road, Chester. Someone is pounding on the door. Not there anymore. Possibly the neighbor having a dispute. Saw a light in the house across the street turned on; she can hear someone screaming 911. Believe the person that was at the door was wearing a white shirt. Elderly man lives across the street with his wife. Man called 911 stating someone attempted to break in. Someone broke the glass on the back door, reached inside and unlocked the door. Male was wearing a gray hoody. States he was chased by males with firearms and he dropped his backpack with a firearm in it. Male arrested for criminal trespass and burglary. Report to follow.

CITIZEN ASSIST

April 20

4:13 p.m., Carriage Hill Drive, Auburn. Odd incident with the neighbor and would like to speak to a deputy about it. Homeowner wants it on file that his neighbor has told him for the second time, “Do not fly your drone over my property.” He was not flying his drone by his neighbor’s home.

April 23

6:41 p.m., Madison Road, Huntsburg. Parade of family and friends for a 98-year-old World War II veteran’s birthday. Caller anticipates a large turnout.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

April 21

1:24 a.m., Lois Lane, Hambden. Caller said her daughter was beat up by a male in a trailer park. Daughter has multiple injuries. Mother has daughter and was advised to stay at residence until deputies arrive. Male arrested for DV.

FRAUD

April 17

8:56 p.m., Wayne Lane, Hambden. Caller advised she lives on “Batman Wayne Lane” and Dr. Hildenbrand took a report from her last week. Tonight she thinks someone from Nigeria is hacking her stimulus check and wants it to be documented. Attempted to contact caller five times. She did not pick up; unable to leave message because the voicemail box is full.

9:48 a.m., Wayne Lane, Hambden. Caller is very paranoid. She thinks people are tapping her phone line and getting personal information. She advised she has been taking her meds. She believes someone is using her credit cards. Dispatch asked caller if she has checked her bank accounts to confirm activity. She said no. Advised caller to contact banks to see if there have been unauthorized transactions.

April 23

10:46 a.m., Dogwood Lane, Auburn. Suspicious email containing caller’s passwords from 20 years ago. They have to pay $2,000 in bitcoin so their information isn’t sold.  Person who emailed threatened to expose his pornographic web searches to his contact if he did not send him the money. Caller threatened that if he tried anything he would be exposed to his friends. Caller said he has never searched any of these websites so he was not worried about the threat, but was worried the person could have other personal information. Caller also advised he did not give person any money but wanted it documented in case something happened in the future. Advice given.

SUSPICIOUS

April 18

9:18 p.m., Jacobs Drive, Auburn. Caller in lobby received threatening email. Party who sent it knows all about her but she does not even know who they are. No threats or crime. Advice given.

April 19

11:59 p.m., Bass Lake Road, Munson. Out with vehicle at Munson Township Park. Female home from college and wanted to drive around her hometown. Reminded of stay-at-home order and advised she would return home.

THEFT

April 21

1:28 p.m., Legend Creek Drive, Munson. Grandsons forged check from grandparents’ account for $1,200. Money is being returned; grandparents do not want charges filed.

April 22

2:59 p.m., Clark Road, Chardon. Caller is a real estate agent and the son of the owner keeps stealing the “For Sale” sign. Deputy spoke with son, who said he did not take the signs. He was advised to stay away from the signs in the future. Caller did not have any evidence showing son took the signs. Advice given to both parties.

WELFARE CHECK

April 17

12:45 p.m., Woodin Road, Hambden. Student has not logged in to the computer for school work for the past month since this started. We have tried emailing and calling there, no answer. If child needs a Chromebook, they can call the board of education office or her teacher. Spoke with parents. They are having trouble logging in and said they have not received any missed calls or emails. Advice provided.
