Jan. 8-14, 2021

The following is a sampling of the calls handled by the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office Jan. 8-14, 2021.

ANIMAL PROBLEM

Jan. 8

1:46 p.m., Ravenna Road, Newbury. Caller says there is a raccoon in the road for about five hours, walking around. Deputy responded. Unable to locate jaywalking raccoon. Roadway is clear of any hazards.

CITIZEN DISPUTE

Jan. 9

3:40 p.m., Grove Road, Troy. New neighbors are putting an invisible fence in the ground. Caller believes it is on her property. Both neighbors are in a verbal dispute over it; parties are now separated. Deputy referred both parties to county GIS and also advised complainant to have her property surveyed since she does not agree with the county’s records.

Jan. 11

11:09 a.m., Kile Road, Claridon. Neighbor dispute over tree branches. Complainant called regarding tree branches from last week’s incident. Neighbors cleaned up the branches from complainant’s trees and piled them on her property line. Complainant upset the neighbors did not clean/remove the branches and now it will kill her grass. Complainant advised she will give permission to step on her property line and clean up the pile. Neighbors agreed and removed branches onto their property.

FRAUD

Jan. 8

11:38 a.m., Sidley Road, Thompson. Computer was hacked, passwords changed, gift cards purchased. Deputy met with complainant who reported his Best Buy, Walmart and PayPal accounts have all been accessed by an unknown person(s). He advised PayPal will return whatever funds are lost with a local police report. He will be following up with bank to close his accounts.

5:46 p.m., Clay Street, Huntsburg. Caller was defrauded on eBay. He sent $2,000 for a car. He thought he was purchasing a 2009 Nissan Maxima. See report.

Jan. 10

10:53 a.m., Hosmer Road, Parkman. Caller wants to report fraud. She was told she won Publishers Clearinghouse and did purchase some Visa card already.

Jan. 11

3:33 p.m., Farmington Road, Parkman. Caller states someone hacked his email and is using his contacts to extort money from his friends and family. Caller advised to change his password and to notify the people on his contact list of the potential scam. Caller also advised to create a backup email for future use when changing his password with Outlook. Emailed added.

SUSPICIOUS

Jan. 8

11:17 p.m., Merritt Road, Munson. Caller lives in Idaho and was on News Break app and saw a comment from a male from Newbury. Male stated, “If you want a glimpse of 2021 refer to the Mandalay Bay shooting.” Caller is concerned male is planning something. Deputy advised of pending call. Dispatch was able to locate male on Longview Drive in Newbury. Deputy made contact with male at his residence and was advised of the complaint. Male stated online post was not a threat. He added post already was removed. He said with how 2020 went he could see more people doing “crazy things” in 2021 like the Mandalay Bay shooting. Male was cooperative with deputy and said he would be more careful with what he posts online. Nothing criminal about the incident.

Jan. 13

7 p.m., Clay Street, Huntsburg. Aircraft reporting it was struck by a green laser, 5 miles due north of the airport. He was 10,000 feet up. It was a total of three different lasers from same spot. Deputies patrolled area of Clay and Pioneer. While investigating the origin of the green lasers, deputy interviewed Clay Street resident and learned he recently had a green laser come through his house window, on the west side of house facing Pioneer Road. Deputy met with Pioneer resident who said he bought three green lasers for his two juvenile sons. One juvenile was home. Showed deputy the laser, which was activated in a safe direction and it produced intense green beam. Juvenile denied shining laser in the sky. Deputy advised father to confiscate the three lasers. Deputy also advised of the seriousness of the alleged crime as well as safety issues. Father told deputy he would secure the lasers.

THEFT

Jan. 14

5:05 a.m., Taylor May Road, Auburn. Three vehicles rummaged through sometime in the night. Several items removed. Report taken.

7:46 p.m., Taylor May Road, Auburn. Chainsaws stolen from garage sometime overnight. Report taken.

8:25 a.m., Taylor May Road, Auburn. Cars were broken into. iPad, notepads and bags were taken. Caller’s wife’s credit card was taken from her car (not her purse, just the card). It was used on Amazon Music for like $4. Deputy advised. Report to follow.

11:54 p.m., Mayfield Road, Munson. Black male wearing a dark sweatshirt, mask ran out with a 24-pack of Budweiser beer and two cartons of Newport cigarettes. Caller did not see the car. Deputy spoke with clerk who said while she was processing the purchase the suspect took the items and ran out the door toward Bass Lake Road. Deputy reviewed the tape and observed the male take the items and run out of store. Unable to see face due to wearing a mask.

WELFARE CHECK

Jan. 11

9:29 a.m., Mayfield Road, Claridon. Teenage female went on winter break to Mexico on vacation. She contacted CHS advising her passport expired and she cannot return. School would like a deputy to check the residence and see if she is there or of there is anything they can do to help if she is, in fact, being held in Mexico. Deputy responded to location. Upon arrival, deputy noted several bills and disconnection of service letters on door. Unable to locate anyone and the trailer appears to be vacant. School advised and will make more phone calls for follow up.
