The following is a sampling of the calls handled by the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office Nov. 4-10, 2022.
AGENCY ASSIST
Nov. 6
1:21 a.m., Kinsman Road, Burton. Corolla coming up on 534. Vehicle was a wrong way driver behind their unit. Coming into Middlefield. 90 mph on Hayes. Northbound 608. Squad requested for crash. Assisted OSHP Ashtabula, Trumbull and Chardon posts with pursuit. GCSO units were attempting to get into position to spike vehicle, however, prior to spike deployment vehicle crashed at intersection of 87 and Aquilla. Scene security was provided until assistance no longer needed. OSHP handling crash report.
ANIMAL PROBLEM
Nov. 8
3:53 p.m., GAR Highway, Montville. Caller has called five times concerned about an image someone posted on their Facebook page. Caller believes the photo depicts a bar patron giving animals what he believes is alcohol. He has called the humane society and other federal agencies, and they all referred him back to GCSO. Caller believes it is animal cruelty and would like to talk to a deputy about an investigation.
Nov. 9
6:36 a.m., Oak Drive, Newbury. Caller caught a skunk in a have-a-heart trap on his porch. Deputy advised. Caller was advised to call a nuisance animal control company.
Nov. 10
3:54 p.m., Georgia Road, Burton. Loose cow in the road, white and black. Caller has followed for almost a mile on Georgia. Second caller advising cow is near Ameri-Tow. Third caller advising the cow is back on Georgia. Cow’s owner lives on Gingerich Road. They believe all cows are back and accounted for.
ASSAULT
Nov. 7
3:10 p.m., Kevin Lane, Hambden. 11-year-old female was assaulted on school bus by another student. Rescue refused. Caller wanted it documented that his daughter was struck in the face by a candy sucker that was thrown by an 11-year-old boy on the bus. Parents called the school for further follow up.
CITIZEN ASSIST
Nov. 8
12:56 a.m., Bass Lake Road, Munson. Toilet has overflowed and is flooding the house. Cannot turn the water off. Assisted homeowner as needed.
CITIZEN DISPUTE
Nov. 7
3:29 p.m., Sperry Road, Newbury. Caller states neighbor has the drive blocked and is being held hostage. Male parked his truck on the access drive and is not allowing vehicles to pass. Male is now back in his house. Parties are separated. Civil issue over a driveway resurfacing and access to the property in question. Advice given.
SUSPICIOUS
Nov. 5
1:21 a.m., Butternut Road, Burton. About 80 kids from St. Helen’s at Camp Burton. Vehicle not involved in retreat drives in and when they see the night patrol they speed out. Have done this twice. Asking for deputy to drive through area. Deputies responded for suspicious vehicle report. While sitting at Camp Burton the suspicious vehicle returned. All juvenile passengers. Driver cited for violating probationary license. Two paintball guns confiscated. Potential charges for criminal mischief, trespassing to follow. All juveniles were picked up on scene by parents.
Nov. 8
8:40 a.m., View Drive, Newbury. There is a male standing in the parking lot with his dog on a leash, arms crossed in front of him. He isn’t saying anything or doing anything, but standing there. Caller thinks it is intimidation for voters. Deputy responded. Male and dog were gone. Voter workers did not call. Male stopped to let his dog go to the bathroom and was causing no problems.
Nov. 9
11:33 a.m., Linda Drive, Newbury. Caller advised she knows she is being scammed by someone claiming to be Publisher’s Clearing House. After them calling her 4-5 times this morning, they advised her of her own address and said they would be there at noon. Now she is scared because they have her address and advised they are on their way. Deputy responded to location and met with complainant, who did not provide any personal information or purchase any gift cards. Complainant requested incident be documented and advice. Advice given.
THEFT
Nov. 8
9:06 a.m., Widgeon Drive, Munson. In lobby to report theft. Caller’s Verizon account was compromised. Someone ordered a new Verizon phone and phone was sent to her parents’ home. Male came to house to try and get the phone, but her mother would not give him the phone. Caller began to get phone calls from a private number with a male saying the phone is stolen and she needs to return it. Caller called Verizon who sent a shipping label to the caller, who is going to ship the phone back.
Nov. 9
10:09 a.m., Rapids Road, Burton. 32-year-old son has been stealing from caller. Sometime yesterday he stole tools and a gun. Report taken.
THREATENING
Nov. 9
12:17 a.m., Mayfield Road, Munson. 15-year-old male sent some photos and now they are calling and threatening for money. Male had given them his dad’s Apple Pay information, but they continue to make threats and this is how the parents became aware. Male sent photos to a female on Snapchat and she threatened to send out the photos if he did not send her money.
TRESPASSING
Nov. 7
9:46 a.m., GAR Highway, Hambden. Neighbor that caller does not speak to has encroached on caller’s property with his lawnmower and grass clippings. Has no trespassing signs and stakes out. Deputy advised. Caller stated his neighbor had turned around on his mower and encroached on his property by approximately two feet.
